experience and enthusiasm By Greg Huneault the News The transition from landscape architecture to police work was an interesting one for Kevin Bahm. The transition from police work in downtown Toronto to Terrace Bay will no doubt be an interesting change as well. But for Terrace Bay's newest police constable, it is one which he looks forward to with anticipation. Constable Kevin Bahm became the newest member of the Terrace Bay Police Department when he joined the force on June 25, 1988. He comes to Terrace Bay with 12 years of varied police experi- ence which he acquired while employed with the Toronto Metro Police Force. Constable Bahm has worked in the detective branch, drug enforce- ment, the Youth Bureau and the Community Relations Branch and says his experience is "very exten- sive in extra training." Although police work is his pre- sent occupation, he originally planned a different career path. Born in Schumaker, Ontario, he moved to Armprior north of Ottawa where he spent his youth. He attended Ryerson Polytech- nical Institute in Toronto where he graduated from the Landscape Architecture program. He said he had relatives on the Metro police force who suggested he pursue a career in law enforcement, so he submitted an application. He was hired and assigned to 14 Division, which he says is the busi- est division in North America. While working out of that station, he was exposed to all facets of the job, and although he enjoyed it, he says police work should be more than "throwing people in jail. "Police work means being involved in the community," said Const. Bahm. "It's an opportunity to deal with the public in a casual business manner." When the chance to accept a position with the Terrace Bay Police Department arose, he grabbed it. The area provides Bahm the opportunity to pursue fishing and hunting interests, and he said he enjoys other sports as well. He played soccer with the Metro Police Red Team, and he has played and coached hockey and soccer at various levels. With his background in land- scape design, it's not surprising when he says he also enjoys horti- culture. Some of the landscaped homes in the area have not escaped his critical and trained eye. "T've noticed some homes that are extremely well kept," he said. "Compared to Toronto, I think there is a higher per centage of peo- ple in Terrace Bay who take care of their homes." Const. Bahm said things have been a little more hectic than first anticipated, but he is preparing for the arrival of his wife and four chil- dren, who will be moving shortly to Terrace Bay . The personable and approach- able constable said he has been very pleased with the friendliness and reception he has received. "People have been excellent. They've helped to get me settled and be a part of the community." Const. Kevin Bahm is now a member of the town police depart- ment and one who looks forward to dealing with the public.
