Federation angry with Short notice of delay The Ontario. Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH)has vehemently opposed the very short notice given to hunters about a one- week delay in the opening of 1988 moose hunting season. In a strongly-worded letter to the Honourable Vince Kerrio, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources, the OFAH pointed out that many moose hunters had already booked their vacation times and applied for their adult valida- tion tags based on previous open- ing dates around October 2. The Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters Association (NOTO) has also objected, stating its member lodges had sold moose. hunting vacations based on the previous opening date. Although the Minister indicated there would be some later openings when he spoke to the OFAH Annual Conference on February 26, neither he, nor his staff, indicat- ed the huge area to be covered until a press release was issued on April 15. The affected Wildlife Manage- ment Units, in the core moose range, stretch north of the French and Mattawa Rivers, Lake Superior and the Ontario-Minnesota border. Both the OFAH and NOTO have called on the Minister to delay the later opening for at least one year so hunters can plan according- ly. The OFAH has stated it would - use that time to review whatever data government biologists can produce, and would only agree to a later opening if biological data indicates unit-specific management prescriptions are required to achieve the objective of the selec- tive harvest program for moose in Ontario, the protection of prime breeders. That position. is consistent with a resolution given to the govern- ment in August, 1986. Emphasis would need to be given to unit-spe- cific management, not broad-brush season reductions.
