3-year plan for education grant commitments total $381 -million Education Minister Chris Ward today announced the first year's commitment in the three-year school capital plan described by the Treasurer in the 1988 Ontario bud- get. Province-wide grant commit- ments launched this year will total $381 million, and when combined with local contributions will pro- duce $504 million in capital pro- jects over 3 years. About 91 per cent of the grants, or $347 million, will be designated for new construction, creating approximately 45,000 new pupil places. "When the entire three-year capital plan in completed, we esti- mate that we will have created 110,000 new pupil places,"said Mr. Ward. On Wednesday, April 20, Ontario Treasurer Robert Nixon announced a $900 million, three- year grant commitment that will enable school boards to undertake $1.3 billion worth of capital con- struction. "This three-year program will enable us to plan and build our ele- mentary and secondary systems in a sensible and confident manner, " said Mr. Ward. "Tt will allow us to direct our resources to the area Ox: most criti- cal need -- the creation of new pupil places," he-said. "Since tak- ing office, this government has cre- ated more than 78,000 new pupil places, in addition to providing sig- nificant allocations for renovations and renewals." The government's first priority will be the creation of pupil places in those growth areas where the need is the greatest, Mr. Ward said. Mr. Ward reaffirmed the gov- ermment's commitment to the pro- vision of child care facilities in every new school. More than $15.5 million of the allocations will be directed to the creation of child care spaces. "If we are to display continuing leadership, and maintain our pre- eminence in the field of education, we must invest and reinvest in our capital stock," Mr. Ward told the Legislature. "This is a prerequisite to the excellence we expect. Our young people deserve no less." "This government has demon- strated its commitment to education by first doubling, then tripling, and now, in the 1988 Budget, quadru- pling the amount that was spent on school capital in the year we took office." Preventable deaths in balance continued from page 4 that tens, and probably hundreds of thousands, of preventable deaths hang in the balance unless a signifi- cant intervention in the tobacco epidemic takes place. Bill C-51 is the Government's promised response. We are simply insisting, for an entire generation of kids, that the Government act with integrity and keep its promise. Sponsored by thé school, the township and the Terrace Bay Police Department, the course examined some of the many prob- lems and choices which teenagers -- face today. The general topics discussed were: Creating Impressions, Belittling Others, Peer Pressure, Authority, Vandalism and Drugs. Of the topics discussed, students say they learned that it is important to present a positive appearance; that peer pressure can be positive and negative; that increased responsibility comes with increased authority, and authority must be respected; vandalism is costly to everyone; and that the value of life must be measured against the value of drugs. Grade 6 teacher Mrs. Davey said the program resulted in "'excel- lent discussion and some thought provoking questions." The students admitted they have "a lot to learn about growing up." The students and Mrs. Davey thanked Reeve George Ramsay, the Terrace Bay Police Department, and singled out Const. Callaghan of the local force for his help in pro- viding instruction during the course.
