Page 2, News, Wednesday, May 25, 1988 It was a busy week for Rossport By Anne Todesco Our Fire Committee had their first call last week since the forma- tion of this group in the village. They were called to extinguish fires on the Alty property at the Northwest end of the village and the other at the viskis lawn and quickly had bot fires under control. The Rossport firefighters have a well-equipped fire hall and a truck tank. The volunteer firefight- ers answered the call for help and were promptly on the scene, and they did an excellent job to keep the fires under control and prevent them from spreading. St. John Berchmen Altar Society members met Tuesday evening at Mrs. Freda Gerow's home for the regular monthly meet- ing. Josephine Kenney offered to plant flowers at the grotto and Prina Gerow announced that the new cross for the cemetery was ready to be painted and be placed in the cemetery. Anne Todesco reported that 13 boxes of clothing have been distributed to one-parent families and others requiring assistance. She also said that she has sold some articles. Prina Gerow is to hire a boy to cut the grass at the church. Final arrangements were made for the annual Flea Market and Bake Sale on June 4 in the Rossport Community Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be a book sale, used clothing, homemade baking, a lunch bar, and draws. Following adjournment and the closing prayers and blessings by Father Radamaker, luncheon was served by the hostess. Among those who were Thunder Bay visitors: Mr. and Mrs. Lester Legault, Mrs. Anne Todesco, Mr. and Mrs. Sundland, Mr. and Mrs. Bain and Lorenda, Mrs. Hilda Mushgush, Mrs. Molinski and Robert Beaugarde. Victoria Armstrong is a patient in the Terrace Bay Hospital. Master Michael McGrath is in the McCausland Hospital. Father Radamaker presided at the election of the officers for the Altar Society who were all re-elect- ed for another term. They are: President--Mrs. Prina Gerow; Vice-President--Mrs. Freda Ge- row, Treasurer--Mrs. Laura Legault. The harbour was cleared of ice on Tuesday, May 3 by a nor'-east wind. Many sport boats have been launched from the Government dock. We had our usual snowstorm in May; however, lawns are show- ing green again. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Gerow have demolished their old home. They are cleaning up the property and planning to build a cottage on the lot this summer. Romeo and Juliette & Bits 'n bites By Helene Ballard Hello, Sorry I was unable to make it last: week, but I tell you this little ol' lady was really decked by some kind of a bug. If someone had stopped the world for five days, I would have been the first one off. However, I'm back, shaky but you can't keep some of us "Seniors" down for long. I see our resident gardener Cliff Barker is busy again this year with our garden, so we can all enjoy fresh vegetables. Well, there sure have been busy times around the Old Homestead. Firstly, they took down the chim- ney, which was really something to watch, then repairs were done to the balcony on the second floor. Now it will be safe once more for Thank You The family of the late Kenneth Plummer would like to thank everyone who was so kind to us. To those who made donations to various charities, the cards and flowers and the wonderful baking. To those who donated their time to help us through this difficult time. A special thanks to Mr. Hunt for the comforting service and the ladies of the Community Church for the lovely Lunch served after the service. My children and 1 will always remember your kindness. Robert, Brian, Nancy & Winnie Romeo to climb up to visit Juliette (heck might as well fantasize a bit to put some pep into this place). I guess. the local and provincial police had a busy weekend -- and we thought we lived in sleepy, little towns. This should be a good warn- ing to all of us to be sure and lock our doors when we go out. We never know when someone would enter our home while we are out and that would not be a very good surprise to find a stranger in. our home. Our card-playing friends were in, which always makes our resi- dents happy. Our thanks to these ladies. It sure will be nice to see the leaves out and on the trees again. Our little feathered friends are back at the 'feeding station' on our back patio, and it's a nice past time for us to watch them. Our monthly Birthday Party was hosted by the Ladies of the United Church in Schreiber, and we all enjoyed a 'Penny Auction' after our cake and coffee. Our birthday kids for May are: August Rentz, Lauri Jarvi, Nelson Smith and yours truly, Helene Ballard. Our Ivan Nelson Smith was 97 on the 16th, and what a wonderful old gentleman he is. Believe me, he still has both oars in the water. He does a lot of reading every day, and at different times in the day you can hear his cheerful whistle; what a great guy. As far as this old girl, I don't know if this world was ready for me or not, but I came anyway on May 19, 1910, and I'm still here 'bugging people.' Now if I may: when I first start- ed to write these bits and bites four years ago, I ended one week with a poem, and since then I have been asked several times to please repeat it. So for you and some oth- ers who may not have read it, here it is: "There is a destiny that makes us brothers, None goes his way alone. Happy 97th Birthday to Mr. Nelson Smith. On Monday, May 6 the Chimo Bridge Club held their wind-up with a banquet at Rosie's & Josie's followed by an evening of bridge where prizes were given out. The following winners were: Albina Welbourne, High Ladies Average for the year; Gina Caccamo, Men's High Average; with Mary Ihnatko, runner up in the Ladies and Al Slater runner up for the men. A few lucky draw numbers were drawn with prizes going to different winners. A fun eve was spent and enjoyed by all. Al Slater was elected president for the com- ing year.
