Page 12, News, Wednesday, April 27, 1988 Nakina girl has chance in the States Nakina-December 14, 1985 was a very special day in the lives of a young Nakina couple, Bruce and Debbie Redgrift. After a rather difficult pregnancy, Debbie gave birth to a 7 lb. 7 0z., baby girl, Ashley Katherine Dawn. Ashley has greatly enriched and given new meaning to their lives. She has touched the hearts of those who have come to know her. On June 13, 1987, Ashley was diagnosed as being a victim of the genetic disease known as "Spinal Muscular Atrophy"; a disease which silently strikes infants. In the past, youngsters with S.M.A. rarely walked, and their life span was considerably shorter. Thanks to modern technology and the fine work of a Canadian doctor, gigantic steps are being taken to help those unsuspecting victims. Dr. Roy Douglas, at the Louisiana State University Medical Centre, specializes in helping chil- dren like Ashley. Even though reseaerch in Canada is advanced, a particular ambulator (brace) is patented by Dr. Douglas. He has spent 18 years working with S.M.A. victims and guarantees a better quality of life for his patients, many of whom have been walking with this brace for some 7 to 8 years. His work is known through- out the world and often times, he sees patients from as far away as Scotland. Bruce Redgrift has lived in Nakina all his life. He met Debbie here in 1976 and they were married in 1980. They have made Nakina their home, and have raised their family here. They have two daugh- ters; Mandy, 6 years old, is in Senior Kindergarten at the Nakina Public School. The younger, Ashley, is afflicted with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Bruce has _ worked for Kimberly-Clark as a machine oper- ator for 13 years, and although recent company cut backs have altered his job position, he remains employed with Kimberly-Clark. Both Debbie and Bruce are active members of the Nakina. Curling Club. Bruce is also an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 116. Every year, Debbie instructs youngsters in a "Mini-pops" show, a regular part of the Winter Carnival. She is also teaching an evening aerobic class through the Nakina Recreation Department. Ashley turned two on December 14, 1987. She has big brown eyes and long brown hair. She is very pretty and loves to colour, do puz- zles and has all her preferred books. A lot of Ashley's favorite toys serve a dual purpose. Debbie is careful to select toys that are both fun to play with, yet promote stretching and strengthening of muscles at the same time. Ashley is very bright and so talkative that her vocabulary increases daily. It was- n't until June 13, 1987, that Ashley was diagnosed as being a victim of S.M.A. ( As with any of us, this young couple was devastated by the news. They became part of a parental support system throughout Ontario and it was through families that they learned of Dr. Rcy Douglas. Unfortunately, not all families can fund the horrendous expense of getting to New Orleans for the help these tots so desperately need. It is with this in mind that we launch, and ask you to be a part of, the "ASHLEY TO NEW ORLEANS" campaign. The ambulator required for Ashley costs $4,900.00 in Canadian Funds and the two-week therapy sessions consist of four strenuous hours daily, at $60.00 per hour U.S. funds. This may appear to be a stagger- ing amount to raise in so little time, but whom among us can put a price tag on a little girl's dream of walk- ing? * Bed Mats * Box Liners * Chrome Bumpers * Running Boards * Box Rails * Tailgate Gaurd * Grill Gaurd * Driving Lights * Sport Wheels *** and many more!
