Plan considers Hydro's future energy needs Ontario Hydro's Demand / Supply Strategy has been submit- ted to Energy Minister Robert Wong and will be publicly reviewed in this year, Chairman Tom Campbell said. Campbell says the strategy provides a framework for Hydro to use in planning to meet future energy needs. "This report does not propose specific projects Hydro is going to undertake, but is rather a basis for government and public review leading to development: of a final strategy," Campbell said. President Robert Franklin says the strategy sets out specific plan- ning principles covering both the demand for and supply of elec- tricity. Mobile eye care clinic from page 4 ing costs, enabling the van to visit only 19 communities this year. I have followed with much con- cern the constant erosion of support for essential services in Northern Ontario. At every opportunity the government expresses support for medically necessary programs and facilities, but yet again, I am reminded of a policy of systematic underfunding, atrophy and neglect. Surely, you should be taking the initiative in implementing a for- ward-thinking policy that will enhance, rather than hinder the pro- vision of such quality services to Northerners. I urge you to reconsider your decision to cut funds for the CNIB mobile eye care clinic, and encour- age a joint cost sharing mechanism between both ministries for the future provision of this essential service. PRCCCCCECEECE CEC pursue all options "On the demand side, we are proposing to pursue all options to reduce demand for electricity that are comparable or less costly than building major new Satta sta- tions. "We estimate that greater effi- ciency in electricity use has the potential to reduce demand by 4,000 to 7,000 megawatts by the year 2,000," Franklin said. "On the supply side, the prin- ciples include giving the highest priority to: maintaining and improving existing generation stations, developing economical hydro-electric generation and encouraging independent genera- tion. "The strategy also recognized the importance of power purchas- es, keeping abreast of new coal- burning technologies, and main- taining the CANDU nuclear option so that it's available for ' future development." reduce demand growth In 1984, Hydro began a detailed study of how it could reduce growth in electricity demand and provide new electric- ity supplies that would meet Ontario's needs to the end of the century and beyond. The study analyzed a full range of options from technical, economical and environmental perspectives. Hydro also held a series of meetings with special interest groups and civic, business and customer representatives to obtain their views. This public input was com- bined with Hydro's earlier analy- sis to develop the planning strate- gy. Campbell said Hydro will out- line the strategy in detail during the public review process.
