Government to double rehabilitation professionals from page 4 : fessionals across the province and particularly in Northern Ontario. In order to address this prob- lem, I recently announced the government's goal to more than double the number of rehabili- tation professionals serving Northern Ontario. To achieve this goal, the government is providing addi- tional funding to reach $1 mil- lion annually by 1990 for incentive grants and bursaries to attract professionals to the North. This includes an increase in the number of bursaries to be awarded for speech pathology and audiology from six in 1986-87 to 17 in 1987-88, and an increase in the level of bur- sary assistance from $5,000 to $7,500 annually. The provision of bursaries to Ontario residents attending schools in the United States is still under review. A new program of incentive grants has been introduced for speech pathologists and audiol- ogists willing to relocate to Northern Ontario. These grants will support 36 speech pathologists, who will receive $15,000 over three years in return for service in the North. The Underserviced Area Program of the Ministry of Health is actively recruiting rehabilitation professionals for the new bursary and incentive grant program. I am assured that these ini- tiatives will go far in address- ing the needs of the North. Again, thank you for writ- ing, Premier David Peterson. Birchwood hosting St. Patrick's Tea By Helene Ballard "Bits and bites I hope you are all enjoying our Spring weather along with meet- ing snow and lakes of water. I hope this will be the last of the snow for this year. Our loyal card players were in Tuesday in spite of the nasty weather. Our residents always enjoy those afternoons; our thanks to these faithful friends for their devotion. Last Sunday one of our former staff members Pat Culverhouse brought a yummy chocolate cake to Birchwood and we all enjoyed a slice of it. It sure was good, Pat, and we all want to thank you very much for your kindness. Our Ladies' Auxiliary to Birchwood held their monthly meeting here at the home. These ladies are always making plans to help us in some way, and bring some happiness to our lives and we thank them. At this time I would like to remind you of our St. Patrick's Tea on March 17. Do pay us a visit and enjoy a nice chat with friends over a cup of tea. Not much more news, so I'll close for this week with this "wee joke": Sign on the washroom of a municipal office: Don't throw cigarette butts in the toilet. It makes them soggy and hard to light.
