POT-2SO MNR hold open house from page 3 This includes enhancing the understanding and acceptance between user groups; attempting to minimize user conflicts between anglers and commercial fish operators; reducing conflicts between anglers and tourist oper- ators; and reducing conflicts between tourist operators and resource extractors. The ministry plans to also increase scientific and technical information. In this area, the ministry will: gain more accurate and up-to-date information concerning the fish- eries resource and its user; apply new technology (computers) to aid and expedite data manage- ment and reporting; encourage and stimulate research on Lake Superior; encourage applicable fisheries information exchanges between agencies; and conduct experimental management pro- jects. Access points Another very important plan of the MNR is to improve the presently limited access points to Lake Superior... - The ministry plans to encour- age the development and mainte- nance of these points on the lake in the next five years (discussed earlier). Because the public has mis- conceptions about the edibility of some fish species, the MNR plans to also promote the use of under- utilized species; namely, lake whitefish, northern pike, yellow perch and pink salmon for anglers, and chub for commercial operators. One more area in the plan is the prevention of the loss of fish or fishing opportunities. The loss in the Terrace Bay District occurs for a number of reasons, one being the illegal introduction of new fish species "into a water body. Others include the illegal har- vesting of fish, dams, culverts and bridge construction impeding the movement of fish species; the loss also occurs due to private, municipal and industrial develop- ment such as mines, industries, municipalities and MNR road clo- sure or closing water supply lakes to fishing. For more detailed information on these topics, the MNR urges you to visit their office in Terrace Bay. The ministry also held open houses for its fisheries manage- ment plan in Manitouwadge on Feb. 2, and in Marathon on Feb. 5: "\...protect, rehabilitate, enhance, and maintain Ontario's fish communities and their environments...." MNKR has put development of plan for Slate Islands Provincial Park on hold The Ministry of Natural Resources has put the develop- ment of a Management Plan for Slate Islands Provincial Park on hold, pending a decision on the permitted uses of Ontario's Provincial Parks. Ron Running, Terrace Bay dis- trict manager, explained that "A cabinet review on the uses per- mitted in parks is expected soon. We feel that waiting for this issue to be resolved will result in a bet- ter, more realistic plan. "In the Slate Islands case, the decision will determine whether or not mineral exploration and extraction will continue to be a permitted activity in this park." The planning process has see the MNR go to the public on two occasions seeking their input. A Background Information and Optional Plans document was presented for review in. February, 1986, The comments at this review indicated that the public generally wanted the Slate Islands to sary. In November, 1986, a Preliminary Management Plan was presented for public review. Running said that "This plan was well-received. We incorpo- rated many of the ideas and strategies identified by the public in the previous reviews. "The plan proposed the devel- opment of some basic facilities such as trails, campsites, docks, anchorages and shelters." A key element of the plan was to ensure the protection of the park resources- both natural and cultural. Management strategies were presented dealing with the park lands, fisheries, wildlife, histori- cal and recreational resources. The Preliminary Plan was developed ..on the -premise that mineral exploration and mine development would be a permit- ted use in specific areas of the Slate Islands Provincial Park. Running advises that "Subsequent to reviewing cabinet direction, the planning process will be reactivated. "There is a great deal of inter- est-in this park, and we intend to keep people up-to-date and involved in its development."
