(7Pelaute | ae ° i aires What the world needs now is love, love, love! What an appropriate title for us to keep before us as Christmas has come and gone. The song recorded years ago has not lost its appeal, for love lies at the heart of all songs. The Christmas Season is a song about love; the best of all kinds because it centres around a precious new life. People get all sentimental about babies; even the crustiest old Scrooge-types find their hearts touched in the presence of a tiny baby. And who among us has not rejoiced to see a baby in a mother's arms? Who can deny that the bond women hold in common comes about because they are the bearers of life? When I visit a new mother in the hospital, the sense of love for her newborn often seems somehow overshadowed by a sense of awe and wonder at the miracle of life that has been wrought in her. The Wise Men travelling far from the East felt that same awe and wonder and they left precious gifts befitting a king. What dreams a mother has for a child; even before birth she wonders what kind of person her child will become; what talents will dictate the direction the child will take. Mary, the mother of Jesus, also pondered these thoughts during her pregnancy. She tried to recapture the moment when a presence she could not explain had told her she was to become the mother of'a'son to be called Jesus. "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most-High God." The thought that God had reached out to her of all women gave Mary cause to rejoice that he would choose one so humble. But her joy was mixed with concern for she knew what the child would face as he grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man." Mary's Song of Praise has become known as the "The Magnificat"; one of the great hymns of the Church. "It is a passage that is saturated in the Old Testament," says William Barclay. "The Magnificat is the most-revolutionary docu- ment in the world," says Stanley Jones. Mary knew that her son would be the long-expect- ed Messiah who would confront the evil in the world and would set in motion all of the forces that would one day bring about the true "peace on earth to men of good will", and that God's Kingdom would become the Master's plan for his people.
