Claude Garton, conservationist, botanist and teacher, Ontario's conservationist of the month Claude Garton of Thunder Bay, a conservationist, botanist and teacher who is a world authority on Northern Ontario plants, was Ontario's conserva- tionist of the month of November. The monthly award, presented by the Ministry of Natural Resources, is part of Wildlife '87, a national conservation awareness program that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Canada's first wildlife sanctuary at Last Mountain Lake, Saskatchewan. "In addition to his tremendous achievements in pure botany, Garton's work has been invalu- able to several generations of wildlife habitat managers throughout Northern Ontario," said George McCormack, assis- tant deputy minister of MNR for Northern Ontario. As a young teacher, Garton began collecting, mounting and labelling vascular and non-vascu- lar plant specimens when he moved to Northwestern Ontario n 1928. He soon became the supplier of specimens to herbariums across Canada and the major cap- itals of the world. In 1967, Garton donated his personal herbarium to Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. The Claude E. Garton Herbarium today contains more than 90,000 specimens, 40 being botanic firsts for Ontario which were personally uncovered by Garton. But his influence has ranged beyond the ficld of botany. In 1968, he worked with a team of Students studying the effects of spruce budworm spray on birds and aquatic life. Garton also collected data on the Mattawin River-in preparation for establishing a fish and game reserve and was the first to dis- cover the 'bat cave' at Cavern Lake. As a teacher- both profession- ally and on a voluntary basis with small groups- Garton has taught hundreds of students about every- thing from wildlife and fisheries to Indian pictographs and rock polishing.
