By Ken Lusk The News Several large trucks were found to have deficiencies in proper operating procedures as a result of a commercial vehicles check by the Schreiber detach- ment of the Ontario Provincial Police. In one instance, the OPP dis- covered a transport was display- ing the wrong placards for the product being hauled. Transport Route Canada Inc., of Calgary, Alberta, was served an offense notice for not having an insurance card; this is not in compliance with the insurance act. Also on Nov. 11, Sutherland Bros. Ltd., of Moosomin, Sask., was charged with failing to pro- duce an operating licence; this charge falls under the Public Commercial Vehicles Act. The transport was hauling a product it was not licensed for. Also on Nov. 11, Aurelle Dagenais, 45, was charged with driving while disqualified, which is in violation of the criminal code. As part of the same check, the Schreiber detachment of the OPP conducted the commercial vehicle checks over a two-day period from Nov. 10 to 11. . Corporal Don Burton of the detachment said a large number of trucks were checked with 15 charges being laid for various violations; a number of warnings were also given he said. Burton commented these statistics show some housekeep- ing and administrative duties of these companies are not up to par. Burton said Cox travels to var- ious places like Thunder Bay, Kenora, and Rainy River and works in conjunction with local OPP detachments. Together, these officers con- duct checks of the transporting of hazardous goods (commercial vehicles in general) to ensure compliance wi:h the laws and regulations in force. Credit card The OPP also report that on Nov. 7, at 11 a.m., a report was received that an altered credit card had been used. As'a result of investigation, Jerry Reddick, 29, of Burnaby, British Columbia, was arrested in Sault Ste. Marie and due to appear in court there. On. Two lower windows were damaged and the incident is still under investigation. On Nov. 14, Archie Gleason, 35, of Kingsway Road (Highway 17), in Schreiber, reported to police that his residence was entered during the night. His home was unlawfully entered and minor damage was done to property inside. Nothing was stolen and the incident remains under investiga- tion by the Schreiber detachment and an investigation unit from Thunder Bay. Car fire Corporal Burton of the Schreiber detachment reports that a car fire took place on Nov. 21, at 3:30 a.m. A 1981 Mazda, owned and operated by John Pinsent of Winnipeg, Manitoba, caught fire as it was travelling westbound on Highway 17 near Jackfish. The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.- There was subsequent damage but no esti- mate is available. Liquor seizure The OPP's R.I.D.E. checks (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) are working! On Nov. 22, Dominec Penney, of Steinbach, Manitoba, was charged with having liquor other than in a residence. Penney was issued a 12-hour suspension for blowing a warn on the alert machine.
