New deputy clerk-treasurer hails from Marathon but loves Terrace Bay -- By Ken Lusk The News Another new. addition to the community of Terrace Bay is the Deputy Clerk-Treasurer of the township, Lorne Mitchell. Mitchell, who arrived in Terrace Bay on Sept. 1, hails from Marathon where he was an accountant for the township there. Before that, he was an accoun- tant at Pic River Forest Products Inc. While he was at the township, Mitchell enrolled in a program which he now has one more year to complete. The program will qualify Mitchell as a member of the clerk-treasurers of Ontario. Taylor vice-principal We had a bit of excitement this past week when school was can- celled on Tuesday due to the sud- den change in weather. Everyone did finally make it home without any major problems. This Thursday the high school gym in Terrace Bay is going to be used by the elementary schools for a volleyball tournament from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Spectators are welcome. Report cards from the high school went out last Monday in preparation for the parent-teacher interviews on Wednesday, November 25, during the after- noon and evening. If you have any questions, please phone the high school office. Our senior boys' volleyball team played the NSSSAA cham- pionships this past weekend at Nip-Rock High School. They won 3 matches to 0 against Michipicoten "High School (Wawa). They will now play the NWOSSAA 6 finals against Atikokan in Terrace Bay staring © on Nov. 27. Please phone the high school for match times. You may have noticed some high school students out working in the community recently during school hours. Their presence is there because of two programs from the high school being organized by teacher Bill McDougall. The first, the Co-op Education scheme, allows students to earn high school credits towards-a diploma while working at a place- ment in the community which relates to an in-class subject. At the moment, we have the Superb co-operation of 21 busi- nesses and: professionals helping out. In the second category, 20 stu- dents were recently placed to do six hours of volunteer work each Ss part of the Career Guidance ind Counselling course. This work was to stress the mportance of volunteer work in he personal development. If your son or daughter is no long with us, we would appreciate your assistance in seeing that any borrowed textbooks or resource material you may find around your house are returned to the office of either campus. The two of them and the rest of the staff are "a team", he said. Right now, Marg Simmer, the past-deputy clerk-treasurer, is training Mitchell in all aspects of his job. "If anyone has a problem, we go to her," he said. "It is challenging. I get to actu- ally deal with the public." Mitchell is referring to the dif- ference in working in an office and only seeing only four walls. "The job is interesting and challenging; one-on-one with the public. : "I enjoy meeting the public.
