"secs Bay Schreiber Wednesday, September 9, 1987 Vol. 42, No.37 Serving Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport i Education minister's trip cancelled last Saturday By Hadley Koltun Special to the News What was supposed to be an endorsement of Liberal Candidate Herman Mannila by Education Minister Seari Conway was can- celled due to bad weather. Mr, Conway was expected to arrive in Terrace Bay on Saturday, September 5, but he was fogged in in Sudbury, Ontario. Mr. Conway had intended to come to Terrace Bay to endorse Manilla, Liberal Candidate for the Lake Nipigon Riding. Conway was unable to attend a reception at the recreation centres in Terrace Bay and Schreiber. Prepared to respond Fortunately, Manilla and his staff were prepared to discuss the issues in the clear and compfe- hensive manner which has char- acterized the Provincial Liberal campaign. Manilla, who resides in Nipigon, Ontario, is. concerned about the mass exodus of the younger generation from the North to the larger urban areas of the South, such as Toronto. Manilla would like to see the youth involved in research pro- jects in forestry and regional development. He claims that he would rather listen to what the people of the Lake Nipigon riding want. Manilla believes that the Provincial Government, which is based in Toronto, quite often does not fully-understand the impact much of their decisions have on citizens of the North. _ _ Manilla claims he will not "make any promises until they can carry out plans for economic diversification. "Mr. Peterson is really com- mitted to the North," he said. see page 3 | for Solfution In a series of articles that | will appear in each issue -- during September, a _ Remedial Action Team has | Above is Liberal Candidate for the Lake Nipigon Riding Herman Mannila. Terrace Bay Boy Scouts in need of 'community aid The Group Committee for the Terrace Bay Boy Scouts is in need of adult help. Primarily, we are again short a committee chairman and at least three committee members. Russ Phillips has Jeft our group after doing a great job as chairman, and he will be greatly-missed. Also, we are in dire need of a cub leader and assistant leader or leaders. Reg Gagg and his wife Ann filled those positions last year on a short-term basis. We need somebody who will be able and willing to hold the position for at least a couple of years. If we get no response there will be no cubs this year and ultimately that will start a decline of the scouting movement in Terrace Bay. That would be a shame now that we have such a good and capable leader for the scouts. Ken Benoit has started a great deal of interest-in the scouting program with some of the conservation programs he and the ministry have started, Since he has taken over with Moe Stark as assistant, the number of boys has more more than tripled. There is also great interest for the Beavers led by Sam Harris and assistant Warren Pearen. Beavers are aged five years to eight years and there has been an average of 20 boys in the group. When the boys reach eight years of age they are too big, so they swim up to cubs. Each year there are about six to 10 boys that swim up and if there are no cubs there will be no place for them to go. This would therefore have an adverse effect on the Beaver colony and nothing for the boys to look forward to after Beavers. So please, if you feel you can help in any way, either as a leader or on the group committee, please contact Charlie Matson, Forest Notwell or Dave Kaiser. - We also accept mothers as leaders. Please call.
