Students creating their own job High School students across Ontario are creating their own summer jobs by forming youth job co-operatives, summer busi- nesses in which the students share costs, responsibilities and profits, Gregory Sorbara, Ontario min- ister of Skills Development, called this "a unique alternative to traditional summer employment," and commended the young peo- ple for their initiative and imagi- nation. Each co-op gives as many as 15 young people, under 19 years- of-age, the chance to own and manage a business together, acquire job skills and develop leadership abilities. This year there are 25 youth job co-ops, as compared with eight last year. In 1986 they pro- vided summer business experi- ence for 130 teenagers. Each co-op is initiated and sponsored by a local community group such as a chamber of com- merce, a youth trust or a caisse populaire. The Ministry of Skills Development is providing resource materials and training sessions to assist organizers of the co-ops. Resource materials and pro- motional activities have been developed in co-operation with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and with Direction Jeunesse, a provincial franco- phone youth organization. Twelve of the 25 co-ops are being started by French-speaking students. Youth co-ops usually offer a variety of services. They may put on a birthday party for a child, answer business phones, clean swimming pools, clean up after a major event, provide care to shut ins and demonstrate commercial products.
