Bike Safety Program already in full swing The Terrace Bay Police Bike Safety Program has begun, and already the first week's recipients of an award have been chosen (see pic this issue). The program, run by Terrace Bay Police Constable Gary Callaghan, will run from June 7 to the end of August. The idea is that police officers on or off duty, and even citizens, keep an eye out for elementary Students who are riding their bikes and practicing good, safe, road rules. (If a citizen sees a good biker, he or she should con- tact the police with that child's name, age, address and parents' names). When a biker has been stopped by an officer, he or she will be told they will receive an award (a maximum of two children will receive awards per week for the duration of the program. At the end of the program, there will be 24 children who have received Help us break the weekly awards. The News will publish the pic- tures of the weekly award win- ners. A banquet is planned for September for all the participants in the program and their parents. Grand Prize At this banquet, two names from all the children who partici- pated (24) during the program will be drawn out of a hat. Those two lucky winners will receive a brand new bike each. These bikes are on display in Terry's Sight & Sound and in Granny's. Constable Callaghan told the News that the program is aimed at elementary students from both the public school and the separate school. He said the police have held lectures with the students informing them about bicycle safety. The intent of the police is to get the children to remember the rules they have learned so they can apply them in the street. Callaghan would like to note that if a child is practicing good bicycle safety but the bicycle is in bad repair, that child is not eli- gible to win one of the weekly awards or the grand prize. He said that at the banquet in September, all 24 children who participated during the program will receive a certificate. This week's winners The winners for this week's awards are Robert Fenton and Melissa Hnatuk (see picture this issue). Constable Callaghan said this is the second year the Terrace Bay Police have run this program. He said he was the one who institut- ed the same program when he was in Red Rock. The program ran for three years in Red Rock, Callaghan said, and it was a great success. "By the third year, the kids were clamour- ing for prizes. And when some kids saw that some other kids were not doing some safety rules properly, they would tell them," said Callaghan. zee ee 8 ADVERTISING DOESN'T COST!
