To the Editor: Should Euthanasia be promot- ed in a Christian Democratic community? Writing in the Jndi- ana Law Journal, Louis Kutner, matter of factly stated that efforts to legalize, voluntary enthanasia have been persistantly rejected because they appear to be an entering wedge which opens the doors to possible euthanasian and genocide. What Kutner says is a commonplace in all the literature that treats of death by choice. He is evoking, of course, the ghost of Nazi. Germany, where some 275,000 people are though to have been murdered in German euthanasia centres. Today, there is no precedent that is more regular- ly brought forward than this one, and well it should be, for what happened in Germany did not happened in an ancient tribe cen- Father of the year The Father of the Year is Mr. Birch, left, shown with his daugh- ters, Cathy, Beverly, Jennifer and Stephanie, who wrote the winning story (see page 1). The German euthanasia is the Nazi period began at a more moderate level. It was to involve only the severely and hopelessly sick. But once it grew and spread preposterously, until hundreds of thousands of socially unproduc- tive, unemployed, defectives, and Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, June 24, 1987, page 11 Should euthanasia be promoted in Christianity? eventually, racially "tained" per- sons were liquidated, this all started from small beginnings. If we allow exceptions, even in the case of a mature adult who wishes his death in the face of unbearable alternatives, the logic will send us cascading all the way to compulsory imposition of death. Some of our citizens are proposing what is called euthana- sia, at present only who are a nui- sance to themselves, but eventu- ally it will be applied to those cit- izens who may be a nuisance to our politicians.
