Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, April 8, 1987, page 9 Midget Hockey Champs Students warned about drugs continued from page 7 Rainbow Road Greer also told the students a story about a boy named Joe who lived on Rainbow Road. Greer included the use of an overhead projector for pictures to tell the story about Joe and his family. Joe's father abused alcohol and this resulted in a lot of confused emotions for Joe and for Joe's mom and dad as well. So Joe and his dog Fuzzy went for a walk one day and on this walk Joe did a lot of thinking about his situation. Joe thought that it must be his own fault that his dad acted mean and yelled and broke things in the house after he had been drinking. He thought that if he was a bet- ter boy, his dad wouldn't yell anymore. Many animals Joe felt lonely, confused and ashamed. As he walked, he met several different creatures. He met a farmer whose seeds would not grow because there was not enough rain. The farmer felt helpless to do anything and Joe realized that was like him- he felt helpless to do anything about his dad's drinking problem. Joe also came across a cracked bird's egg on the path. He felt sorry for the little bird because the bird's mother should love and take care of him Joe thought. Joe felt the same in that he thought his mom and dad didn't love him either. But the bird's mother did appear and Joe was glad that she did love the little bird after all. Joe came atross a pond full of ducks that were fighting for bread. That reminded Joe of himself again. He promised himself he would do more and care more for other persons in the future. Joe ask- ed God to help him be a better person. All of a sudden, a growl rent the air and Joe was frightened. Joe hid behind a tree but the bear told him to come out because he wouldn't hurt him. The bear was holding its toe because he had stubbed it. The bear told Joe that he used to scare the other animals in the forest. And then one day there was a terrible storm. The bear got frightened and asked God to save him. If he did, the bear promised that he would be friends with all the animals. So the storm went away and the bear has been friends with all the animals ever since. "I want to be friends with you too," the bear told Joe and Fuzzy. An owl told Joe that he should ask God for answers and to pray. Joe was starting to feel better about himself. He-realized that he is a good person and that he should not be sad all the time- he was understanding himself more each day. Joe was almost home and was feeling good even though he didn't know what to expect once he got inside his house. Maybe his dad was drinking and his mom was upset. What is the message? Greer told the 'kids that the message from all that is that it is not their fault if their parents are drinking or using drugs. She said the students must remember that it is not their fault and that they should tell somebody if they are having problems at home like that. One student said that you should never give up hope on someone you love. 3 rules in that house Greer said there were three rules in Joe's house that he had to live with when his dad was drinking. They were 1) don't talk about it at all, 2) don't feel- don't be sad or At left are photos from the Thunder Bay District Hockey Championship games that took place in Schreiber last weekend on April 3, 4 and 5.
