'From this would-be hot stove league, came a motion to elect a ten- tative 5-man committee with the power to add to their numbers, if the occasion warrants. Elected to this committee by secret ballot were Harold (Mush) Marsh, Paul Boudreau, William (Casey) Kozak, Bill LeBlanc and George (Happy) Parks. "Since its induction, the hockey committee has been mulling over the problems of equipment and teams, but at this writing nothing definite is available for publication from the hockey moguls. The outdoor rink has been laid out and the go-ahead signal should be given any day now. "It has been learned that the rink willl be equipped with lights and a dressing room. It's going to be great for a bush league fellahs! "Tentative plans call for a house league composed of as many teams as there are enthusiastic players. From this league, a representative Company team will be iced to play outside clubs. 'Don't think that we have forgotten all of you who do your skating minus hockey sticks. Plans will be make for pleasure skating. So come on you fellahs, put on your blades for a lot of healthy fun this winter." Early history of the News Terrace Bay resident Edna Beddard told the News that the newspaper began its life as a weekly Kimberly-Clark release- printed and circulated there as well. Mrs. Beddard said that her now deceased husband, Jim, was in charge of the paper in the mill from 1953 un- til 1957 when K-C asked him if he would take it off the company's hands. (At the time of this printing, the News could not uncover any details prior to 1953). Jim Beddard did take over the paper and he rented the very same spot where the News is now. (The phone number and postal code were the same as they are now). Mr. Beddard operated the paper with his wife Edna. Isabel Marsh also work- ed with them and the two women work- ed in the office. Edna Beddard was the News' first-ever advertising manager. Isabel Marsh did the typing and the like. At this time in the history of the News, delivery boys were hired by the paper and they circulated it door-to- door in Terrace Bay, said Edna. Jim Beddard used to type his stories into an electric typewriter and then he would run the paper off on Tuesday night on a duplicating machine. Jim Beddard ran the paper from 1957 until late 1960 when he:sold it to Isabel Marsh. The paper changed hands on December 31, 1960, said Ed- na Beddard. Isabel had been with the paper from day one, said Edna, so she had no problems. Edna told the News she was dissap- pointed that her husband left the paper. Doing the paper and working at the mill was too much work for him, she said. Mr. Beddard was with Industrial Relations at Kimberly-Clark.
