Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 25, 1987, page-5 More letters- cats and thank-you ' continued from page 4 This unfortunate, albeit understandable habit leads to the deaths or injuries for numerous cats annually in Ontario. Cats tend to crawl up under the hood of parked vehicles. Once the owner returns to the vehicle and starts the engine, the cat is unaware of the imminent danger until it is too late. These unfortunate accidents could be eliminated, or drastically reduced if the person driving the vehicle banged on the hood of the vehicle or honked the horn prior to starting the engine. If the horn is used to scare the cat, ensure enough time is given to allow a cat to escape before turn- ing on the engine. Do not make the mistake of beeping the horn and then im- mediately turning on the engine. Vehicles equipped with space heaters are more likely to attract cats seeking warmth. Alerting any cats lurking under the hood of your vehicle should be done each time you start the engine. This way you will develop a habit of alerting cats and will be less likely to forget. While cats are less likely to crawl under the hood of a vehicle in 'the warmer weather, being curious creatures, they have been known to do so. Good turnout reported at Winston Lake meeting At the Winston Lake Open House in Schreiber on Feb. 17, there was a good cross-section of people from both communities. Superintendent of Employee Relations, John Smrke, was pleas- ed at the turnout. The open house gave residents the opportunity to review general information about the mine and to see graphics and photographs. Smrke said there were 12 representatives from both the Mininstry of the Environment and Falconbridge on hand to explain the mine's processes and to answer questions. The public meeting scheduled for Feb. 26 will have a more for- mal setting, Smrke said. Falcon- bridge will offer a more formal presentation that will make people aware ahead of time about the mine. Questions from the floor are encouraged. These public meetings are part of Corporation Falconbridge's ap- plication to the Ministry of the En- vironment for their review and approval. The more formal public infor- mation session takes place on Feb. 27 at the new Legion Hall in Schreiber. FOLLOW YOUR HEART HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION OF ONTARIO IF YOU DON'T At the open house on Feb. 17, a public information handout was available to the public which outlines the mine's processes. The mine is located approx- imately 20 kilometres northwest of Schreiber. The ore body has reserves totall- ing about 3 million tonnes which gives a 10-year life expectancy to the mine. * It is anticipated that upwards of 150 people will work at the mine- a number of these people are ex- pected to come from the local com- munities. Newcomers to the area will likely settle in Schreiber, Ter- race Bay and Rossport. _Winston Lake Project Surface Water Diversion Channel aA Conveyor t Powerline | I NS SO es ad . sce . i, esis 2 Y \:) aS = Propane Tank ( As 2 Holding ) \ _ ' == 4, \\Y- ~ Gravel Road *, , \ 3 < Plant Site Runol! + \\ Settling = 3 Site Location Plan "Winston Lake 'Project 'Site Plan D Surface Water Diversion Channel Crusher Holst Buliding Mine Dry, ) Engineering Olfices / Paice Collar House Pe: 'Administrative Building ; a Shop!
