He also learned how competitive the sporting goods business is. By mid-April of last year, Marcella and Lyttle were ready for business. Then in May came the Kimberly-Clark layoff announcement. "We could have backed out then," said Marcella. He has no regrets about going as far as he did. Saranpaas competed in Ottawa By Ken Lusk Terrace Bay's own skaters, Mark and Heather Saranpaa, were in Ottawa last week to compete in the Canadian Junior Ice-dancing competitions. The skating duo placed 12th in their division. Heather, 20, and Mark, 19, have been skating together for several years now but this was their first time in a competition of this magnitude. The Saranpaas were involved in the Terrace Bay figure skating club and have also competed in many competitions. Individually, each has received numerous awards for their skating finesse. Marcella is an electrician at Kimberly-Clark. Although the store is now closed, he has no financial worries. "It is a letdown. It's disappoin- ting. I don't like to start something I can't finish," he said. He may start another business someday. It was a good learning experience that he said he will never forget. Still sell from home Marcella said that items can still be purchased from him but on a one-to-one basis. His number is They have also competed in "'The Northerns", a regional competition. Heather and Mark placed second in the Novice Dance category in the "Northerns" in 1984. This earned them tthe right to compete in the divisionals held in St. Catherines in 1985- they plac- ed fourth in that competition. Marilyn and her husband Esko flew to Ottawa last week to attend the competition which took place from Feb. 1 to Feb. 8. I don't know how many of you know that we have some very nice pieces of jewelery for sale here in the lounge. They are all made by residents at Birchwood. There is a good selection of items and gems, so drop in and see for yourself. Our Activities Director, Sylvie Angus, is looking for volunteers to give an hour or so of their time to help her with different kinds of crafts. If you would like to help, please call Sylvie or drop in and see her. You will be surprised how much you can get out of helping others.
