Five-cent stamp marked 1908 Silver Dart Flight There's an old saying to the effect that behind every successful man, there's a woman. 4 That was certainly the case with Alexander Graham Bell and his pioneer aviation research in Canada, leading to the first powered flight in the British Empire at Baddeck, N.S., in 1908. The aircraft was the Silver Dart, flown on Feb. 23, 1909 by J.A.D. McCurdy. The event was remembered with a 5-cent stamp (Scott 383) issued Feb. 23, 1959. It showed the ungainly Silver Dart superimposed on a background of three modern jets that collectors at the time said were Avro Arrows. The Arrow project was scrapped about this time and the then postmaster general, William Hamilton, was ada- mant that the jets were atypical front- line fighters of the time and did not depict the Avro Arrow. While the man behind the Silver Dart was the inventor, Bell, the woman behind him in this venture was his wife, Mabel Gardiner Hubbard Bell. They were married in 1877, three years after the invention of the telephone (See Canada Scott 641) and a year after the first telephone call (See U.S. Scott 1683). During the summer of 1906, Bell and two young engineer associates, John A.D. McCurdy and F.W. 'Casey' Baldwin, worked at Bell's summer home in Cape Breton, near Baddeck on the Bras d'Or Lakes, trying to come up ~ with a wing surface that would permit efficient powered flight. The staff was soon joined by Lieut. Thomas E. Selfridge, borrowed from the U.S. Army, and Glenn H. Curtiss, a world famous motorcycle racer, who was given the task of designing a lightweight aircraft engine. Mabel Bell watched as they worked hard on Bell's tetrahedral kite that he was so sure would be the perfect fly- ing machine. She came up with the Aerial Experi- ment Association, founded Oct. 12, 1907. She funded it with $20,000, a considerable amount at the time, and gave it a one-year mandate to have a man fly. There were terms, of course. The four would work to complete Bell's kite. After that, each would help the others on a machine of their own design. Blue Hill The lakes passenger steamer Blue Hill towed the kite across the water. It must have been a beautiful sight as it quickly became airborne and soared to 150 feet. The kite came down so smoothly the pilot, Selfridge, didn't realize he was back on the water. However, someone forgot to cut the towline, and the kite was towed to destruction. Selfridge narrowly escaped with his life. Experiments with other aircraft con- tinued, but at Hammondsport, N.Y., Curtiss's home base. Poor Selfridge. In August 1908 he was appointed to the new aeronautical board of the U.S. Army. In September, he was killed when an aircraft in which he was flying with Orville Wright crashed. continued on page 8 JB AR ROK AE ES 2K OE 2 2K 2 2 2K 2 2K 2K OK OK 2 2K OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK KK KE OK OK OK KKK TERE I RK AK EEK EE OK KE KK A KE OK EK OK EK KE KK KK MORROWS PIANOS & ORGANS ARE HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THEY WILL .
