Christmas season The Christmas season is by us for another year. Relatives and holiday visitors have left for their homes across Canada and the U.S. We all celebrated Christmas Da Now everyone is taking down the Christmas decorations, dismantling the tree then setting it out for the garbage man to cart away. But it still holds its head up while recalling the joy it brought to many a home. Last but not least, is the gathering up the numerous gifts that were about the tree and putting them away in their alloted places in the house. Everyone settles down to the regular work and chores for another year, with compliments of the year to cheer them along. They circled the town singing carols and making special stops at the homes of the senior citizens and shutins- namely, Mr. and Mrs. Schelling, Mrs. Anne Todesco, Mrs. Kathleen Paulmert, Mrs. Hilda Mushquash and others. Finally, they ended up where the children were, had lunch and hot chocolate, and then the kids were off home to be tucked into bed to dream away the long winter's night of Santa coming in five days' time. The adults remained at the hall and sang carols with Dave Speers at the piano. This was followed by lunch and refreshments. This event was reminiscent of days gone by when Fred Gerow supplied the horse and hay-lined bobsled plus blankets. His son John was the teamster. Other times we would have the sled ride over right away in an evening and go back to our community hall for a feed of pork and beans or spaghetti, bread and butter with lots of hot coffee. The first trip across Lake Superior to Vein Island where the Molinski brothers had their first lumber mill was quite an event with only a week's cold weather to make the ice- it was a risky trip. However, when the Molinski brothers came across to the mainland . with their big horses and sled for the mail and supplies, we had enough con- fidence to try it. They brought an invitation from Mrs. Molinski to visit them. Fred Gerow offered his horses and equip- ment for the occasion with Johnny, our driver, again. So away we went on Sunday after- noon. We were a very quiet group of adults on our way over the bay. Most of us just prayed for our safety. Upon arrival, Mrs. Molinski had a delightful lumberjack meal ready for us. We were livelier on the return trip singing, laughing and telling stories of past experiences on the lake ice or haul- ing huge loads of timber down bush roads and hills to be piled on the ice to be boomed up and floated in a raft to lumber mills-and box factories. Oh, those were the good old days. The New Year's dance was a gala event with people from Schreiber, Ter- race Bay and Rossport present. Music was by Peter Gerow with his tapes and records. Taking admission was Michael Molinski, bar lady was Linda Joiner and lunch convener was Billie- Joe Keating.
