1987 is on the road By Mary Hubelit Out of the darkness they loomed, over the top of the bridge. Headlights flashed excitement into the swirling snowflakes. Slowly, warily down the bridge the snow-plow led the convoy, warning with its ice-blue flasher. Then the local police car, the provincial police car and then...and then...in a breath-catching moment, one very small vehicle and its brave driver plow- ed through the blowing snow. Cheers rang out, eyes dampened, throats chok- ed up so one could only wave, and Rick Hansen's cavalcade was minutes away from shelter, and rest. The Man in Mo- tion could be still for a while. The time was 5:45 p.m. One wonders how many other nights of adverse weather in other lands this entourage must have faced; how many other hundreds of eager and grateful citizens waited in rain, snow, heat or winds to help this crusader. We had waited since four o'clock, in the warm car, out into the cool wet evening, in the car, into the building to donate and to assess the size of the welcoming committee. Back in the car, checking one intersection after another, finally stopping at Kenogami road, we waited. A wicked thought crossed my mind- "I'll bet our casserole will be ruined"; - I pushed it aside just in time to see the approaching lights. So another young man has joined the ranks with Him who taught and en- couraged care and healing and compas- sion, and some of them have died in His name. Let us hope we can remember Rick Hansen's lesson through '87 and beyond. P.S. The casserole was ruined. CAL Are Business Sales Down? Why Change all that! Another pleasurable portion of the evening was the arrival of the North Shore Variety Band, led by Doug Mcllwain. Members' joined in the chorus as lovely Christmas music filled the lobby.
