Kinsmen Club"s fate in question The Kinsmen Clubs of Terrace Bay and Schreiber have amalgamated due to the low membership of each club, said Kinsmen member, Mac Rogerson. A club should have 15 members to be in good standing with the zone governor and deputy governor, said Rogerson, and right now they have nine members with the two clubs combined. "*Both clubs were really dying,"' he said, "and we want to keep it go- ing. It's possible we could lose our charter."' The club really needs members, but they (present members) are be- ing more careful this time with who they allow membership. ; They are "scrutinizing" people who want to join in order to remold their image, said Rogerson. 'We have a reputation of being a bunch of drunks," he added. He pointed to an incident last July that almost resulted in the club los- ing an event. The club was holding an outdoor event and had to apply for a liquor licence several months in advance. The person in charge of this job failed to follow proper procedure but luckily Rogerson managed to secure the licence. The club really wants to get members and keep it going, Roger- son noted. The main project on the agenda right now is to boost Rick Hansen's 'Man in Motion" tour. "He's in pretty bad shape (Hansen) right now, so we're going to wait to talk to him because he doesn't even know what he's going to do," said Rogerson. The Kinsmen Club were planning to have Hansen for supper and have him speak, but in his present condi- tion, Rogerson said that's not likely. '*He's on a special diet and his shoulder muscles are ripped so he would most likely prefer to crash out and have a good sleep. 'He ripped one shoulder on the east coast and he ripped the other in Montreal, and he's doing between 50 and_55 kilometres per day. He's pret- ty determined," said Rogerson. Rogerson is thinking about contac- ting the Ministry of Transportation and Communications about a banner to meet him Hansen as he comes in, as well as having a lot of people there to cheer him on. Police briefs A local man has been charged with Fail To. Remain At the Scene of an Accident under the Highway Traffic Act after the Terrace Bay Police in- vestigated a hit and run. Two other motor vehicle accidents resulted in damage over $1,000, and an investigation is under way after a report of theft under $1,000 was received from Kimberly-Clark. A fight that was in progress at a local hotel was stopped by two con- stables but resumed later in a residen- tial area. Police again stopped the fight and one of the persons involved was taken to hospital "for treatment. The possibility of charges being laid is still under investigation. The Police treated an abandoned vehicle as possibly stolen, but the owner was eventually traced and ar- rangements are being made for the owner to claim the vehicle. Also in the week of Nov. 10 to Nov. 24, a dog bite complaint was received and the pooch responsible has been isolated for the required 14 days; an alleged disturbance was in- vestigated but all was in order at the scene; a call for assisting a resident regarding an unwanted person was at- tended to; a local person who had car trouble during the recent storm was was given help; a bicycle was reported stolen, and a report of lost cheque books was received. [J Police message Drinking drivers continue to kill and injure persons using. our highways. Substantial reductions in accidents have occurred as a result of detecting and controlling these offenders. In Ontario, during 1986, a mark- ed decrease has been established by increased detection and enforcement. Other events which the Kinsmen Club is preparing for, two of which the proceeds will go to Hansen, are a dance-a-thon, a skate-a-thon, a Mother's Day Telethon, a walk-a- thon, and of course the annual Cystic Fibrosis Telethon. Last year, the club raised $5,000 for CF. oe The exact dates of these events are still up in the air, said Rogerson, but they will be sometime in December. The walk-a-thon- is slated for sometime in May. 'People from Terrace Bay will walk to Schreiber and people from Schreiber will walk to Terrace Bay," he said. Plans are also under way for the Kin-Karibou Karnival which includes such events as sno-golf and games for children at the arena. The basic purpose of the club is best described by the motto, said Rogerson. It is to 'serve the com-. munity's greatest need', and that's what they're trying to do. 'We want to give the club a new reputation a new outlook,"' he said. check' technique used in larger cen- tres during the Christmas and holiday season. In the past year, the O.P.P. have expanded the R.I.D.E. program across the province. REDUCE IM- PAIRED DRIVING EVERYWHERE has been effectively used on all long weekends during 1986 and the death and injury toll has decreased dramatically. Locally, members at Schreiber detachment have participated in this program. In the coming weeks, these random checks will be intensified and A.L.E.R.T. tests administered. Drivers failing the test requirement will be subject to impaired driving charges and suspension of their driv- ing privileges. For your safety and the safety of others, PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE.
