By Helene Ballard It's time again for another bit of news. I hope you are all feeling OK. By the looks of the weather, it's star- ting to feel like winter. Oh well, we know it has to come, so I guess we should "grin and bear it."' Our senior bowlers did well this week, and we are proud of Thelma Christianson, who had a score of 354, and Werner Ziegler with a score of 476. Well done. On Oct. 16 we had our monthly birthday party for our residents at Birchwood Terrace. The Birthday Kids this month were Blanche Speck, Susan Gaulin, Thelma Christianson, and Joseph Eyschen. We wish them all a very happy birthday. On behalf of the residents, I would like to thank the ladies from the Anglican Church in Schreiber who were the hostesses for the party. After the usual cake and coffee, the residents enjoyed a few games of bingo. Thank you, ladies, for your kindess. One of our residents, Werner Ziegler, received a plaque last week for walking his 1,000 miles in the Let's Get Active program. Werner loves to walk and does so daily. Even when it's cold, he does not mind the weather because he enjoys walking. So, Werner, congratulations and keep it up. This is a good example to folks on how to keep fit. Until we get into the swing of Christmas activities, there's not too much news. At least we can concen- trate on sports, like the World Series. So until next time, keep your powder dry. Cheerio. Arena programs in place Submitted by the Terrace Bay Recreation Deparment The programs scheduled for the Terrace Bay Arena are now all in progress. Public skating times for the upcoming week will be included at the end of this article. Squash Lessons Gerry Mikalauskas will be con- ducting a class for squash lessons in the courts on Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. As a result we will be unable for the next four weeks to take in either the racquetball or squash courts from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p-m. Our apologies to those indiv- iduals who may wish to book the courts during these times. Miler's -- Let's Get Active Club The Terrace Bay Recreation Com- mittee would like to say congratula- tions to Werner Ziegler for ac- complishing 1,000 miles in_ the Recreation Centre's "Let's Get Ac- tive" program. For newcomers to the community, here is a bit of information about the program. The Miler's Club was originally created in the summer of 1983 to keep the participant involv- ed all-year round in some type of activity. You can walk, job, bike at your leisure, but you must keep track of -- the number of miles you accumulate. Call the Recreation Office on Fridays to inform us of how many miles you have totalled for that week. Ramp to An access ramp for handicapped individuals is to be built at the Town Hall in Schreiber at an estimated cost of $3,000. At its regular meeting on Oct. 14, Schreiber Township Council passed a resolution which authorized the ex- penditure. Work on the ramp is to begin soon, according to the minutes for the meeting as prepared by clerk- treasurer Aurel Gauthier. Council also decided to transfer $34,000 from its reserve funds to off- set the cost of the outside brickwork at the new Schreiber Fire Hall. Fire Chief Peter Doig explained that the brickwork at the fire station is now about 75 per cent complete. Additional information regarding enforcement of the township's pro- perty standards by-law is to be obtain- ed from the municipality's solicitor. Clean-up orders have been sent out to those breaking the by-law. In other Council matters, Gauthier said he would look into the details of granting a license of occupation to the municipality by the Ministry of Nat- Let's Hear From You It is nearing the time for the Rec Department to start rescheduling the winter and spring program. The letter informed Coun- cil about an application by the Schreiber Curling Club for a Club Lounge Licence. The consensus reached at the meeting was that there was no objection to the granting of such a licence. Gauthier was instructed to arrange a date for a meeting with the Ministry of the Environment. A letter from the Ministry requested a meeting to discuss budget items at the Schreiber Water Treatment Plant and Sewage Treatment Plant. Council agreed to sell Lot 32 on Winnipeg Street to Tom Beckett and Ken McKenzie for the total sum of $5,000. Present at the meeting were Town- ship Councillors Tom Quinton, Gerry Godin, Bob Krause, Ed Borutski, and Reeve Mike Cosgrove. children to PLAYSAFE. ASTARY is capturing the attention of children! The War Amputations of Canada's friendly robot from planet DANGER appears on television with a warning for youngsters: "Yours is a dangerous world, so PLAYSAFE."' Josee, a member of the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, is one good reason why The War Amps must reach the very young with the PLAYSAFE message. A month before Josee's fourth birthday, the blades of a lawn mower severed her left leg. ASTAR appeals to children who are too <a young to know the consequences of playing in dangerous places. Under the terms of a new by-law, standing committees of Council have been established which are designed to take much of the detail work out of the hands of the whole Council. Each standing committee consists of two members of Council and the Reeve, who sits as a member of all committees. Membership on commit- tees is-assigned by the Reeve, who designates each Councillor to chair one committee and to sit as a member of another. Standing committees will meet reg- ularly to consider questions under their jurisdiction, and will then make recommendations to the whole Coun- cil in the form of a report. This should mean less time spent at Council meetings, and more eff- icient use of the individual Coun- cillors' time and talents. The standing committee system is also designed to complement a newly- adopted approach to budgeting, which Council hopes will speed up this annual process considerably. The new committees are structured as follows: Administration and Finance: Councillor C. Joubert, Chairman Councillor J. Ziegler, Member Protective Services: Councillor P. Romanuk, Chairman Councillor C. Joubert, Member Public Works Committee: Councillor G. Ramsay, Chairman Councillor P. Romanuk, Member Recreation, Cultural, Social Services: Councillor J.
