Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Committee fru Reeve Chapman said the Committee will decide on the steps it is going to take to respond to the problem. One such step will prob- ably be the start of an im- pact study, to be conducted by the provincial govern- ment, she added. Various Ministry repres- entatives, including several from the Ministry of Nor- thern Development and Mines, met with the Com- mittee in Longlac to dis- cuss the possibility of such a study. A decision on the impact study may be announced at the September 18 meeting Wednesday, September 10, 1986 to be held between Terrace Bay Council and the Depu- ty Minister of Northern Development and Mines. '"'They too are frustrat- ed," Reeve Chapman said. "Even the native people are concerned.'" Two area Indian Band Chiefs also at- tended the Heads of Coun- cil Committee session. The meeting was held just prior to the quarterly Thunder Bay District Mun- icipal League meeting, which Reeve Chapman said was well attended, though there were no representatives from either Nipigon or Marathon = Mine may hire some locals | hiring schedule will "heat up" in April and May of 1987 to peak in August of that year. "'That's our plan, based on the current schedule,"' Smrke said. A troublesome winter this year will set that schedule back, though right now Smrke plans to con- tinue the hiring process for the next 14 months. Richardson Chairman strated at conflicting present. At that meeting, Reeve Chapman learned that the Association of Municip- alities of Ontario (AMO) had passed a Terrace Bay resolution at the AMO's annual meeting held recent- ly in Toronto. The resolution dealt with the province's Special Oc- casion Permit and called for the provincial govern- ment to change the permits _ so that the user group sign- ing for the permit would be liable for any problems arising from the licenced event. As things stand now, the owner of the building at which the lic- enced event is being held is also considered liable. That regulation inspired the Lake Superior Board of Education to pass a motion earlier this year to stop all licenced events from being held at its facilities, in- cluding the Terrace Bay campus of the Lake Super- ior High School. K-C reports Reeve Chapman said she is hoping the AMO's sup- port of the resolution will force the government to at least consider a change in its legislation. The Terrace Bay motion received unanimous sup- port at the AMO meeting. "I'm really happy about that," she explained. It was one of the first resolutions passed. Auctioneer Milo Mahlum of Wadina, Saskatchewan appeared at the Ducks Unlimited Terrace Bay/Schreiber committee's First Annual Dinner and Auction held 6n September 5 at the Schreiber Recreation Complex. Mahlum dazzled the audience with his professional auctioneering skills, and later said the auction was a great success. Some of the items he helped to auction off can he seen on the table behind him.
