New Home This home, owned by Loyd Hebert, is shown here still under construction, but before too much longer it will be inhabited. It is one of several going up on Nicol Island, in Lake Superior just south of Rossport, west of Schreiber. A number of the island lots are still for sale, according to Anne Todesco of Rossport. Isle Causeway This causeway, built over a sandbar, was constructed by Andre Nicol to link Nicol Island with the mainland south of Rossport. The road will allow access by car to the 58 cottage lots on the island, many of which have already been sold. Some of the lot owners have constructed homes on their property. She is accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Helen Berzinc, also of Montreal. The sketch, the "Ain- ora," called in Rossport on the weekend. The owners have a tourist business on an island in the Carribean Sea. They recently went to England to bring the boat with the owners and a three man crew, then took a cruise up the Atlantic Coast and the St. Lawrence Sea- way to the head of the Lakes. The boat was four mast- ed and was able to tie up at the Government Dock. Please Give CANADIAN Been SOCIETE CANADIENNE Du CANCER Bay spent several days here renewing old friendship ties with former playmates when he used to visit his grandfather, the late J.A. Nicol, who was CPR stat- ion agent here in the early 1900s. Shirley Bouchard of Montreal visited her par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Romeo Bouchard. By Anne Todesco Nicol Island is across the sand bar from Rossport, right at our door step. At the time of the construction of the CPR line in this div- ision, the island was own- ed by a company called Smith and Mitchell, who supplied the crews with fresh meat and food supp- lies. They would deliver a shipload of cattle and hogs by sidewheeler wood burn- ing ships to the island to butcher them. When the tracks were finally laid along the right of way, the livestock would be brought as far as the tracks would allow. Then they would unload the stock opposite the sandbar and drive the animals across to the island where they were butchered. Several people owned the island until a Mr. J.J. Spillet purchased it and established a fox (black and cross foes) farm, which he operated for several years. A Mr. Sargent of the Lakehead purchased the island for a summer vac- ation spot. The- original name of the island:has been forgotten by this writer. It was later named after J.A. Nicol, the early CP station master. His grandson, An- dre Nicol, purchased the island, repaired and renov- ated the old Spillet home on it, and holidayed at this island home. He and his wife Linda had the island surveyed in- to 58 lots and developed in- to a corporation. They had plans to make it into a quiet retreat for cottage owners. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, September 3, 1986, page 9 His agent Juris Zdanoviskis said that the lots averaged one acre in size for cottages or, if desired, permanent homes. The owners of the lot are to start building no later than two years after pur- chasing the lots, and the buildings must be a minim- um of 600 square feet. Andre is to make ap- proval of the blueprints. No mobile homes will be allowed, Juris said, and on- ly one house is to be built per lot. Also, no commerc- ial businesses are to be set up on the island. It is to be basically a _ residential place, especially for re- tirees. Over 20 lots have been sold, beginning at $15,000 each. Some buildings are under construction. Com- pleted homes on the island are owned by Loyd Hebert, Dave McCullough, Mrs. Simmers, and Dave Speers (a CP engineer who built his home of logs which fit nicely into the rugged beauty of the island). Juris stated that Mr. Nicol plans to turn the coproration over to the owners when 44 lots have been sold. Mr. Nicol had a causeway built over the sandbar, and a road built on the island. Road main- tenance will be the respon- sibility of the lot owners. Septic tanks and fields take care of the sewage problems. If there is not sufficient earth on the rocks, gravel is hauled to the site to meet the Min- istry of Environment stand- ards. The island has a height of land which provides an excellent view of the bay in all directions. It has a pro- mise of peace and quiet- ness, a place to relax in the years to come.
