"'There are just some things you can't get here,"' he pointed out. "Not anymore, though. His shop will stock a number of items right on site, ranging from fishing tackle to life jackets to in- flatables to sail boards. Then, come the winter, he will switch over to a more seasonal inventory, with ski equipment and hockey gear. Marcella and _ his manager Mary Lyttle noted that if they don't havea specific piece on hand in the store, they can order it by catalogue, especially the larger things like inflatable boats, tents, wet suits, and backpacks. "We hope to be com- petitive with stores in Thunder Bay," he said. "We would like people to come in and have a look for themselves." At the peak of the forest fire at about 4 p.m., there were at least 75 firefighters at the scene, with five water bombers and eight helicopters helping out from the air, he explained. At the same time there were also a number of peo- ple at the MNR District Of- fice helping out with sup- plies and other support. Strassburger admitted that the fire was very much a "close call'? at some town homes, particularly on Cavanaugh Crescent. "Tt was really nip and tuck there," he said. The -blaze crept right up to the backyards of some homes, including Martinez's. Martinez noted that her house survived unscathed, though some ash did fall on the roof. "People thought my house burned down,"' she noted. The flames were so large and so close to her home that at one point it appeared the fire was com- ing from the building. Nickleson credited quick action by MNR water fire crews and water bombers, municipal fire crews from Terrace Bay and Schreiber, Kimberly-Clark forest in- dustry employees, the town . Police Force and support staff for containing the fire. Bob Cockerline, fire boss for the Ministry, said he had nothing but praise for all involved. '*We had eight five-man fire crews on the fire at its -- peak,"' he said in the MNR release. "Other crews were arriving during the day from other disricts." He estimated the loss of forest area at about 250 hectares. Aid was given continued from page 1 our lucky stars," her hus- band Bob said after realiz- ing how close the blaze had come. "We didn't have a clue as to what was going on until we got back here after it was all over." At one point Roberts was sure his house would burn down because the fire was that close to it. Some area residents said the lack of a secondary ac- cess point in and out of the subdivision may have caus- ed some problems in evacuating the area. The only official exit and en- trance to the streets in the new subdivision is Terrace Heights Drive.
