Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, May 21, 1986, page 7 Competition in Terrace Bay cemented with expansion "I feel competition is good for Terrace Bay, because if you are worried about competition, you are worried about your own business." Those were the words of Northern Con- struction and Equipment Rentals (NorCon) owner Randy Mercure, who recently responded to a number of charges raised by area residents in the media. The problem began for Mercure when he applied for a building permit on behalf of Permanent Con- crete at the town office. The permit was granted by the town engineer, although at least. one township resident and some members of Township Council felt Council should have had a chance to in- vestigate the permit before _it was issued. The permit, Mercure ex- plained, was for the in- stallation of a cement hop- per pad, the hopper itself, and a 40 ton silo at his Nor- Con site on Industial Road in the town. 'This will be a cement batch plant," he said. '*Permanent Concrete was going to set it up in Schreiber, and then they contacted us and we made a better deal. We will also be hauling for them."' Mercure took exception to the reports that no local people will be hired by the company, since the op- posite is true. "We will be employing quite a few local students this summer," Mercure pointed out. '"We also have one man now on permanent full-time here, but before he was just part-time. This just clinched the full-time job for him," The addition of the Per- manent Concrete plant will also mean at least $50,000 in additional income this yea for NorCon, some of which will go to the township as taxes. The company began six years ago as Randy's Con- tracting, and changed to NorCon three years ago. He is a partner in the com- pany with his brother, Roddy. Cement hopper Competition is healthy, according to Randy Mer- cure of NorCon (Northern Consstruction and Equip- ment Rentals) in Terrace Bay. He is shown here with his company's cement hopper, which will be the focal point of a Permanent Concrete cement batch plant in town. A large silo, not seen here, was installed earlier this week at the Industrial Road site. ---- THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS NORTHSHORE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE wishes to announce the opening of its centre on May 30, 1986 69 JACKSON ST.
