Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, April 2, 1986 High School Winter Carnival called a success...and fun by Tonya Zborowski The Lake Superior High School Winter Carnival was held this year from March 18 to March 21, with all events being held on the Schreiber Campus. The Winter Carnival began on Tuesday with a dress "down" day. Students were seen all over both campuses in their fad- ed jeans and T-shirts. On Wednesday, each student was asked to dress as "'tacky" as possible. Teachers even got into the spirit by wearing pock-a- dot and stripped ties. Thursday was designated as a dress "classy" day in which students dressed in their formal attire. Friday arrived, and classes were over at 10 a.m. From 10 until 2 p.m., 12 teams made up of students from both cam- puses participated in events such as an obstacle course, catipillar run, road hockey, snow soccer, blind volleyball, and tug-a-war contests. The winning team was team number 10 with Mike Strassburger as the captain of the team. For lunch, the famous "McEd"' burgers were sold. Also, a food booth was set up in which students could purchase munchies from. The individual events were held after lunch. In the arm wrestling contest, the winner in the girls category was Speziale and the winner in the boys category was J.J. Snofl. The belching contest was won by John Trichilo. The last individual event was the pollar bear run. The polar bear run is a race Brenda © across an open field without shoes or socks. This event was won 'by Danny O'Keefe. The Winter Carnival dance was held on the Fri- day evening following the events. The stereo club played the music, and the students had a chance to kick up their heels until midnight. The traditional Carnival King and Queen were also announced at the dance. This year, the students voted for Dawn Spencer as Queen and Steven Denomme as King. Both the King and Queen received roses and will receive gift certificates in the near future. Thanks to the student council, this year's Winter Carnival was a great success. Historical Society establishes aims By Norah McGuire During the past couple of months, members of the Schreiber Historical Socie- ty have been busy setting up its aims and objectives. Through the kind co- operation of the Municipal Council, we now have a large storage and work area. Members have also been spending their time cataloguing and arranging the large collection of pic- Fournier & Son Sports & Cycle 581 aes 825-9315 OPEN FOR BICYCLE REPAIRS, tures done for our Centen- nial celebrations in 1985. Now we are anxious to receive more donations from you, the public. As NOACC is 'appalled' The Northwestern On- tario Associated Chambers of Commerce (NOACC) is appalled at the recent deci- sion by Vince Kerrio, On- tario Ministry of Natural Resources, to cancel all chemical spraying of spruce and jackpine bud- worm areas, a recent news release announced. Congratulations Donna & Gary on your engagement love Guess Who Schreiber . Royal Canadian Legion Spring Dance April 12, 1986 9 a.m. - 1 a.m. well as the need for more pictures to help us outline Schreiber's interesting past, we are looking for old newspaper articles, small NOACC noted that this year the government will abandon 50,000 acres of forest which is so badly damaged that only chemical spray will save it. That's enough woodland to keep the entire local Abitibi operation going for two years. This large area of dead trees will almost cer- tainly trigger major forest fires which will cause more losses, the release added. NOACC accused the government of ignoring the recommendations of its own officials, a special Task force report, the opi- artifacts; in fact anything to do with life in Schreiber and the surrounding area. So when you are spring house-cleaning don't throw nion of the forest industry, and the residents and business interests of the region, all whom have recommended. the limited use of chemical sprays in critical areas. NOACC pointed out that biological spraying was proposed in areas remote from human habitation and in which another season's attack would destroy the forest (budworms must consume the sprayed needles for about a week to be affected by biological sprays -- chemical sprays kill on contact). out anything you think might be of interest to the Society. All articles will be catalogued and marked with the donor's name. A book of memories compiled by Centennial Committee members, Pat Cook and Eileen Ross, is on display in the Public Library. We are also endeavouring to compile a pictorial collection of the Celebrations so if you have pictures you would like to donate, please leave them at the Library. Three panoramic views of Schreiber dated 1884, 1907 and 1932 are on display in the Bank of Montreal. Membership cards for the Historical Society are now available at the Library or from Pat Cook, Michael McGuire, Darcy Furlonger, Jeff McCanna and Norah McGuire. For only $2 you can be a member, supporting the Society in their endeavour to collect and preserve ar- ticles from Schreiber's past. Regular monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Schreiber Public Library. Everyone is welcome.
