Pow! Dean Dunbar, No. 5 in the dark Nipigon Elks uniform, made sure none of the Atikokan Kiwanis Flyers would interfere with his teammate, Leslie Thompson (No. 20) by knocking one of the Flyers to the ice. The rough stuff was all in vain, however, as the Flyers doubled the Elks 6-3 in the consolation final of the Schreiber Pee Wee Hockey Tournament held on March 8 and 9. Terrace Bay Legion won the championship game: over Schreiber Travel Rest Eagles, 5-2. (Photograph by Conrad Felber) New decision criticized Ontario's forest industry is "extremely critical of the political gamesmanship"' which resulted in the government's recent deci- sion to withdraw use of chemical sprays from its 1986 budworm control program, a news release noted. In a speech to the Oakville Rotary Club on March 10, Ian D. Bird of Toronto, president of the Ontario Forest Industries Association, said the government's decision was made in the face of substantial public support of a program to spray 740,000 hectares of nor- thern Ontario forests with a combination of chemical and biological insecticides. Bird told his audience that damage to the northern forest from spruce and jackpine budworm has reached epidemic propor- tions, with infestation cur- rently covering 16 million hectares compared to a 1984 figure of 10 million hectares. In speaking of forest renewal in Ontario, the OFIA president noted that Forest Management Agreements negotiated bet- ween the government and forest products companies now cover 60 per cent of the licensed Crown forests. He added that since the first FMA was signed in 1980, production of forest trees for planting has also increased by 60 per cent to 128.2 million trees in 1985. Bird said the long term outlook for forest product markets is for two per cent annual increases in world demand, "which means survivors of the current dif- ficulties can look forward to better times."'
