Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 19, 19866, page 15 Terrace Bay Rec Centre still a beehive of activity Terrace Bay Recreation News, for the week of March 19, 1986: The Recreation Centre was a beehive of activity during the March Break Activities with approx- imately 20 participants tak- ing part in the Bowling Sessions held on Monday. Tuesday saw an exciting Ping Pong Challenge for students from the ages of six to 16 years old. The most proficient in the 6 to 9 year group were Josie Ray and Kelley Rennette. The age group of 10 to 15 years, saw Mitch Bolduc and Shane Jowitt being the most capable of all the players. Unfortunately we could not entice any 16 year olds and older par- ticipants to take part. Wednesday, the students participated in racquetball instructions for ages 10 to 15 years in the morning with a small mini tourna- ment being held in the afternoon. These activities were held under the able instructions of Warren Sutherland. At the time of this writing, the racquetball activities for the 16 year and up group had not taken place. More news on this event will be forthcoming next week plus results of the 10 to 15 years tournament. Racquetball Tournament: The Racquetball Tour- nament is still underway and hopefully we will have a news report on the win- ners of this event for next week's issue. We wish to remind anyone interested in learning the game of Letters fo the Editor _ Dear Editor: It was of great interest to me to read Catherine Adey's response to my let- ter of February 19 on the subject of day care. I do not feel that my geographical location or status as an "uninformed, armchair politician' are germane to the question be- ing discussed, or that Ms. Adey's extrapolations and misrepresentations of my argument are particularly justified; but she has rais- ed some points worthy of consideration: (1) It should be clear from both my previous let- ters that single parents are not the parties being con- demned. It should also be patently obvious that two adults are necessary for the conception of a child, and therefore both parents are responsible to support the child! I would suggest that monies presently allocated for day care would be bet- ter utilized hunting down those shirking their paren- tal responsibilities. In any case, present day care facilities should limit themselves, to serving single parents. (2) Ms. Adey is correct in asserting that parenting cannot be judged solely by whether or not the mother is home or not. But even a dissident mother will pro- vide more individual care than a paid surrogate can. No one in their right mind would suggest that any social issue can be solved by asserting that responsible people will automatically do the right thing, and that irresponsi- ble people should be given the freedom to choose ir- responsibility. That is equivalent to. suggesting that I ought to have the freedom to drink and drive even though I might kill people. (3) .I also agree that parenting means _ helping your children to "grow to be independent, responsi- ble human beings." However, I do question whether this ought to be expected from children under the age of four. Be honest now. Can you muster enough energy after an eight hour work day to give your children the quality time they deserve? If you think you can, it's likely you are either (a) on uppers, or (b) failing to ap- preciate the scope of your child's needs. (4) As has been previously pointed out, the fact that people without children may be asked to support a Centre is an 'ir- relevant to the central issue as the fact that childless couples pay school taxes and that those who have never collected unemploy- ment insurance pay UIC premiums constantly. Quite obviously, this is an emotional issue, but I would appreciate a logical, well-thought out refutation of my position if such is possible. General Makeup: (Aggie Iwanczyk) This course was originally scheduled for January and has now been rescheduled for March 26, April 2, and April 9. The participant will learn their skin types and the basic techniques for applying makeup. Personal Management: (Anil Kriilani) The participant will learn the basics of Saving and Investing, Principals of Financial Management, Vehicles of Investment, Planning RRSP, Building Investments and Tax Plan- ning in this eight week course which is scheduled to start tonight March 19. Pre-Retirement Planning: Money (Ministry of Tourism and Recreation) There will be an in- troductory session of this program held either at the end of April or start of May with a following full course to be presented in the fall.
