Dear Editor: This is in response to the letter from Peter C. Ander- son from Sudbury regar- ding Day Care in Terrace Bay. It seems that he has suggested that all the ills of our society can be blamed on one thing: *'working mothers."' I beg to differ. As I recall, there was as much of a generation gap when I was a child as there is now, and most mothers stayed home 25 years ago. Mr. Anderson neglected to mention single parents, who have no choice but to work. For those, affor- dable day care is a necessi- ty, not a luxury. There are good parents and bad parents, just as there is good and bad in any situation. I don't feel parenting can be judged solely by whether or not the mother is home. If a mother chooses to 'stay home with her children, great, but if, for reasons that are hers and her fami- ly's business and not anyone else's, she decided to work, that option should be as available to her as it is to any father. Parenting does not mean being a slave to your children. It means helping them to grow to be in- dependent, responsible human beings and that can be accomplished as well if not better by a working parent spending time real- ly talking to their child, than a mom who is home but not taking an interest in what their child is doing. I know that this seems to have gone far beyond the point of whether or not there should be a Day Care Centre in Terrace Bay, but I resent the implications in Mr. Anderson's letter. The fact that people without children may be asked to support a Centre is a more legitimate concern, in my opinion, than those raised by Mr. Anderson. What Terrace Bay needs is a facility that can be utilized by the majority of people in town. An auditorium or hall, which can be used for dances or other functions, that can double as a Day Care Cen- tre during the day, would utilize funds and space more effectively. I hope the people of Ter- race Bay will get, together on this issue and not be divided by what some unin- formed, armchair politi- cians have to say. Catherine Adey Rossport, Ont. RAR AR RK KK KKK Dear Editor: Something new and stimulating is happening in the towns of Schreiber and Terrace Bay. Two separate groups of women came together throughout the past several months and acted upon some of the results of Project Mayday. ~ As a_ result, Drop-in Centres for women were established in both com- munities. They offer various programs of in- terest, but they are also meant to be a meeting for women. Babysitting ser- vices are provided for a nominal fee. No pressure is put on anyone. Where are the women who should be there sup- porting this endeavour? Do you get the winter blues, do your kids sometimes drive you 'round the bend? Are you lonely? Are you new in town with no chain of friends yet? Maybe you just need to be around women who share your dreams and concerns. I have been going to the Women's Resource Centre and I want to say thank you to the women who initiated this project and worked very hard for the good of us all. I realize it is the time of year when we think of our risen Lord and the excitement of the disciples and Mary of the first Easter Day. Jesus, their friend, had risen from the dead. Hallelujah! Easter is also the awakening of new growth and life in our hemisphere and with the first swelling of the buds on the trees and the early flowers and green grass, we feel a kind of ex- citement and exultation, too. How much greater that feeling must be for so- meone who had been blind and now, because of treat- ment and surgery, can see all the beautiful world once again. When a blind person receives the gift of sight it is for them the gift of a new life ... almost a resurrec- tion! Eyes are precious and the gift of sight is God- given. The afflication of blindness is one of nature's sharpest spurs. I also tell them that for each $25 donation they will receive a receipt and a pa- tient identification card showing the name, age and sex of the person to whom they gave new sight and new life.
