Police Chief Russ Phillips explained that the first stage of the program was the actual identifica- tion of valuable material by engraving a special number on such equipment. The crime prevention program entered its second phase last week as Opera- tion Provident stickers were given to the manager of Berglund Industrial Supply Company on Mill Road in Terrace Bay. The company was one of the last to have its equipment marked with its own uni- que sequential identifying number, and the first to receive the access point decals. According to Const. Ron Fewer, the operation has been in existence throughout all of Canada for a number of years. 'Operation Provident was. developed from the concern expressed over the annual hundreds of millions of dollars from businesses, government of- fices, schools, and other facilities, (such as) chur- ches, community centres, and municipal buildings," Const.
