= Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 12, 1986, page 5 Hospital Auxiliary to raise money for ECG machine by Marilyn Chisholm The Auxiliary to the McCausland Hospital has by Helene Ballard Good morning! I know it's time for another of my feeble efforts at writing because it's my laundry day and, you see, I write this while my clothes are being washed. That way I know it's clean. Like most of you, I am still waiting for that prize-winning book been busy over the past few months making changes to the Patients' Lounge. Thanks to the generous support of the people in the area for the projects under- Bits and Bites I spoke of when I first started, but so far .. nothing. But I'll keep try- ing, never say die. I hope you all got through the cold spell we had. It sure will be nice to see buds on the trees once more and hear the sound of ' lawn mowers. It will be a change from snowmachines. Our activities director Joann Leblanc is just back from a workshop at Pinewood Home in - Thunder Bay where 'she was able to learn more about keeping all of us seniors on our toes, as it is very important that we re- main active as much as Jamboree scheduled The Annual North Shore Hockey Jamboree will be held February 21, 22 and 23 in Manitouwadge. There is no charge to anyone wishing to par- ticipate. The tournament is open to anyone between the ages of 12 and 13 years old. All you need is hockey equipment and a little spen- ding money. Winter Carnival Plans for the 1986 Winter Carnival are well underway. It appears that the Centennial spirit is still with us as a large number of groups attended the first meeting. The carnival will be held from March 7 to March 16. A wide variety range of activities has already been planned. The last chance for any group wishing to become involved in the carnival will be on Wednesday, February 12. This will be the meeting to get the advertisement ready for printing. All groups will be asked to confirm their activities, times, dates and places at this meeting. It really does appear that this year's Winter Carnival is going to be a great one, so plan to attend. Children's Craft Courses The recreation depart- ment is pleased to offer under the instruction of Donna Mikeluk, two Children Craft Courses. The first is an afternoon session taking place on March 15th from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Art Room of the Complex. The second Craft Course will be a five week session. Beginning on April 7 and running each Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to May 5. Again this course is open to children ages six to 11. Joann will keep and en- courage all of the residents here at Birchwood to do different things to keep our hands busy as well as our minds. A program of dai- ly exercise for different groups will be started, which we hope will benefit all of us. I know we can- not hope to join the Radio City Rockettes, but we can have fun anyway. Last Thursday night some of our loyal friends, Pam Jones and Lillian Belliveau, brought us some entertainment with Beth Nealy and Ed Barry and his guitar, which turned into a singalong with some of the residents joining in on some old favourites as well as songs from Newfoundland. I am sure we all enjoyed this, and on behalf of the residents I would like to thank these kind folks who came to visit and entertain us. We sure enjoy this. Things are rather quiet, so I'll end this for this week. Stay well. Try this one for a laugh: What do you call a cat that drinks lemonade? A sour puss! Cheers. Over' the next two months the Auxiliary will ~ attempt to make the quiet room more comfortable and appealing. The Hospital now has two glucometers available for the use of diabetic patients. These were also purchased by the Auxiliary. In late 1986, the group hopes to reach its commit- ment of $12,000 to $14,000 for the replace- ment of the present ECG machine. Therefore the Auxiliary members are constantly on the lookout for areas in which they can help towards the im- provements and enrich- ment of patient care. The Gift Shop at the hospital is well stocked with delightful articles to suit all special occasions, and the public is encourag- ed to use it more often. This shop is open every afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. in the evening. Without the support of this Gift Shop, the Aux- iliary would not have any funds available for its pro- jects. The public is remind- ed that all proceeds go towards improvement in patient-care. The next Auxiliary meeting will be held on February 17 at 8 p.m. in the Hospital Cafeteria. Bill Smilsky will speak to the group to explain and demonstrate the preven- tative back care program that is being introduced at the mill. A Valentine Tea has also been planned for Friday, Feb. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. for all patients and visitors at the hospital.
