The above postcards may not look any different from the ones that are sold today, but if you look closely, you will see that the stamp on the top card is one cent whilé the date in the card's message is Dec. 20th, '09, as in 1909. These and hundreds of other similar cards were inherited last summer by Mary Hubelit of Terrace Bay. The cards were all sent to her mother, Winnie Mathers, while she lived in Manitoba, and she kept them all in an album. ~ Old postcards discovered by Mary Hubelit If Christmas is an old tradition, its modes of in- terpretation are constantly changing -- how many of us have the courage to observe **The Season" the way we would really like to? If the old ways are best, let me greet you in 1985 with pictures of greetings from 1907, 1908, 1909 and around there -- before two crippling wars, before the acceptance of the motor car and its consequent reputa- tion as a murder weapon, and before the rich got rich and the poor got poorer. I don't know what the postcards themselves cost, but the postage (sob!) was 1¢ -- one cent, one one- hundredth part of a dollar (the old dollar, that is, not this 72¢* freak!) These cards were received by my mother who, as a teenager, made them a collector's item without ever knowing it. They were put on the trains, sometimes sorted on the trains' mail service cars, picked up at the trains by a man with a team of horses and a "dray" -- sort of a flat-bed with high wheels, delivered to the local post office for final sorting. There were no highways, no trucks, in Neepawa, Man. So, if all these - old postcards could convey their original good wishes, I would add them to mine and say Merry Christmas, Terrace Bay, to the newcomers, the old-timers and the visitors.
