Priorities set by new Council Terrace Bay Reeve Ollie Chapman The newly elected township councils in Ter- race Bay and Schreiber are ready for business. At its inaugural meeting Dec. 2 Reeve Ollie-Chap- man chaired an informal session where councillors were allowed to speak free-' ly about the challenges that face the municipality over the next three years. 'Each of us identified our priorities but we all agreed that the first order of business is to set up a five year plan for the town. ' We talked about it in the past, but now it's time to put it in writing,' said Chapman. The new reeve is. par- ticularly concerned about providing more and better social services to the community. ""We have no housing for senior citizens. In fact, I think we are the only town that has nothing for these people and we' re los- ing them to other com- munities. Affordable fami- ly housing, daycare, ac- cessibility for the handicap- ped and services for our young people are also priorities of this new coun- cil," she said. The Terrace Bay council has also identified the need to upgrade its public works equipment and will look in- to the feasibility of building a community hall and perhaps getting the ski hill - in operation again. Even the city of Thunder Bay only collects continued on page 2 - Man murdered in Terrace Bay A Terrace Bay man was shot and killed on Dec. 6 at 13 Eastgrove Crescent in Terrace Bay, according to a police report released this week. Dead is Daniel Vasil (Bill) Mateeve, 46, of 4 Eastgrove Crescent. Terrace Bay Police Chief Russ Phillips told the News that a 37 year old -Schreiber man, Yvon Lionel Carrier, has been charged with first degree murder in what has been reported as the first murder in Terrace Bay history. Chief Phillips added that Makin' biscuits he is investigating the inci- dent along with Constable Gary Callaghan, with assistance from the Thunder Bay OPP detach- -ment. The coroner for the case is Dr. K. Wilkes of Terrace Bay. Kim Borsa, shown here kneading some dough, took over from Tonya Roper who prepared the dough. After Kim was done, Danielle St. Amand came in to-cut the biscuits from the rolled dough, which was all part of a demonstration that took place at the 4-H Basic Baking meeting on December 4 in Terrace Bay. Felber The long lost Schreiber Cup has finally been found. Now all the Schreiber Junior Hockey Association has to worry about is what to do with it now that they have it. According to Mickey Fortier, Manager of the Schreiber Junior B North Stars team,- the cup was originally made to be presented at an annual competition back in the early 1910s: A team call- ed the Thistles first won the silver trophy at the end of the 1913-1914 season, while the Lions were presented with the cup after the 1914-1915 season. Some time after that, the cup disappeared. Thanks to a woman in British Columbia, the mystery has now been solved. Mrs. M.P. Manson of Coquitlam wrote a letter to the Schreiber Postmaster earlier this year in which she explained that she had come into possession of a trophy which had actually been in the possession of Mr. William Hogg for many years. "TAs her niece and closest relative living here, I had to assume the task of clearing out her apart- ment,'" Mrs. Manson ex- plained. "Among her possessions I found the hockey cup." The cup has been lost for many years, Mrs. Manson noted, adding that she felt it should return to its original home in Schreiber. The letter found its way from the Postmaster into the hands of Mr. Fortier, who said he was grateful that Mrs. Manson went to all the time and trouble of contacting somebody in Schreiber. He then wrote to her about the cup, and eventually she sent it to him. Now that Mr. Fortier has the cup, he would like to have more information on it. "For example, we are not even sure if the Thistles and the Lions were Schreiber teams,"" he said.
