This decision was made because of sharply deteriorating zinc prices combin- ed with higher smelter charges which result in substantially reduced revenue for the mine. These adverse conditions are caused in part by the anticipated reac- tivation of a major Yukon zinc producer. In September, the Company announced its decision to bring the Winston Lake property into production at a cost of $52.5 million on the.assumption that cur- rent zinc surpluses would be absorbed by 1987. Work already commissioned will be completed. Further development is postponed until an improvement takes place in the supply-demand balance of zinc.
