Piano: at any So you've always wanted ,to play the piano! That's a wish shared by many non-musical adults, according to veteran piano educator Patricia Taylor Lee, a consultant to the Na- tional Piano Foundation. '*Over the past 20 years, literally hundreds of-people have told me they have a secret desire to play the piano," says Dr. Lee. "People at parties, at meetings, on planes and buses - when they find out I'ma piano teacher, it's the first thing they say."' Some people, Dr. Lee learned, "want to play show tunes for their friends at parties, or hymns at church. Others love classical music - they'd give anything to be able to play a Chopin waltz. 'But they all share a common misconception: That piano lessons are too difficult, that you can't learn piano when you're an Schreiber Rec continued from page 8 Classes will be held each Monday evening at the Recreation Centre com- mencing September 9 and running to January 9th (2 week break for Christmas). Actually, says Dr. Lee, adults make excellent piano students, superior to children in many ways. '*Adults are self motivated. They study piano because they want to, not because their parents schedule them into it. This gives them an immediate advantage over most children."' Older students also have longer attention spans, says Dr. Lee. "An adult's in- tellectual powers and analytical abilities improve his or her capacity to learn. There's no.truth to the theory that adults learn more slowly than children. In fact, an eighty-year-old can learn at about the same rate a as a 12-year-old." Piano playing is no.longer child's play. A recent survey indicates there are over 18 million amateur adult pianists with a median age of 28.
