New Easter Seal Research Institute Canada's oldest and largest children's rehabilitation organization - The Easter Seal Society - . will give an extra boost to research with the launching of The Easter Seal Research Institute, an- nounced today. The Institute becomes the only major foundation set up specifically to en- courage and _ support research into the preven- tion of physical disability in children and the develop- ment of new techniques of treatment, training and communication. An initial amount of $1.5 million has been set up to ensure adequate fun- ding of approved research applications. Most are ex- pected to come from leading hospitals and universities in Ontario. The new Institute is a reorganization of the former Conn Smythe Research Foundation which was created in 1976 by the Society in conjunc- tion with children's rehabilition centres in On- tario. In the past 10 years, the foundation - with Easter Seal funding - has sup- ported 68 research projects totalling $1.5 million. The name of the founda- tion was changed to avoid confusion with a Smythe family foundation with a similar name, and to more closely identify the research activity with the organization which has been the primary source of funds. Jack C. Wilkinson, of Toronto, past president of the Society and newly elected president of the In- stitute, said that the foun- dation was originally nam- ed to honour the late Conn Smythe who was a volunteer with the Society for more than 35 years. He served as treasurer of the Society from 1947 to 1964 and as honorary president New CP Rail main track Schreiber, Ont. -- CP Rail is re-ballasting 88 kilometres of Northern On- tario main line track on its Schreiber Division at a capital cost of $1.5 million. The work, begun in June and scheduled for comple- tion in October, includes replacing crushed rock with 225 tons of crushed slag along two subdivisions and 9.7 kilometres of sidings. The 75-person crew is currently re-ballasting 16 kilometres on the Nemegos subdivision from 4.8 kilometres east of Ramsay to 9.6 kilometres east of Aubrey. The Nemegos subdivision runs from Car- tier to Chapleau. The second phase of the project is the Heron Bay subdivision and includes the line from eight kilometres west of Pringle to Marathon, a distance of 4 kilometres, and the 32 kilometres between Jack Fish and Schreiber. The Heron Bay subdivision runs betwéen White River and Schreiber. New hockey camp The Thunder Bay Amateur Hockey Associa- tion (T.B.A.H.A.) is pleas- ed to announce the selec- tion of players to attend tryouts at the Ontario Under 17 Camp, held in Waterloo, Ont. from July 21-26, 1985. 'Todd Henderson -- goal, Brian Popiel -- defense, Dan Vaillant -- defense, Gary Wenzell -- forward, Dwight DeGiacomo -- for- ward, Murray Margarit -- forward, and Darryl Blazino -- forward. The Ontario Under 17 Team is coached this season by Don McKee. Regional teams 'from (B=CAALB-). (MAN./SASK.), (ONT.), (QUE.), and the (MARITIMES) will par- ticipate with (Under 17) teams from the U.S.S.R., Czechoslovakia, Finland, Sweden, and the U.S.A., in the Quebec Cup Tourna- ment hosted over Christmas of this year. The purpose of the Under 17 Camp and the Quebec Cup help to iden- tify and bring together the most talented midget aged hockey players playing hockey in Canada as a step in the CAHA Program of Excellence building towards future Olympic and International calibre hockey teams. Approximately 1.2 kilometres of ballast can be replaced by a track gang in a day. The work involves five separate operations: the removal of old ballast; the installation of new ties where necessary; the unloading of the new ballast; surfacing; and track alignment. The crushed slag is pur- chased from Fisher Con- struction, Sudbury. In addition to the $1.5 million in capital for the reballasting program, CP Rail will spend more than $1. million in expenses to complete the work on the Schreiber Division. This year CP Rail plans to spend about $98 million in Ontario on capital pro- jects including the upgrading and replacing of track structures, work on centralized traffic control, bridge construction and in- train inspection facilities. CP Rail will spend an additional estimated $15 million in the province on its regular maintenance repair program. from 1965 until his death in 1980. In addition to sponsoring research into the preven- tion of physically disabling conditions in children, the objectives of the new In- stitute include the develop- ment of new rehabilitation techniques and treatment, including research into technological im- provements in equipment, appliances and com- munication services and devices. Recognizing that excellence in research depends on an adequate supply of qualified research workers, the Institute will Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, July 24, 1985, page 11 also promote research fellowship awards for ex- perienced investigators and research training grants for new researchers. Founded in 1922, The Easter Seal Society is a voluntary organization of 235 local service clubs in communities across On- tario and looks after 6,700 children in Ontario with physical disabilities.
