R. Grandma and Grandpa. School is almost over for another year and we thought that we would ask a few kids what their plans were for the next two months. Some of the replies were: Terrace Bay-Schrelber News, Wednesday, June 26, 1985, page 3 Nathan Randle: Ride my bike, go to the swimming pool and play with my brother. Iam also going to go camping and fishing with my David Mayry: I will be working, and I'm going to have a good time partying, that's it, that's all, there ain't no more. School is out! Keith Milne - Terrace Bay Gospel Assembly School is out! It will soon be the cry of many. For some it is the cry of happiness as they are released to the freedom of summer holidays. For others it is the cry of vic- tory because they have ac- complished a great amount or they have survived another year. Often for teachers it is the cry of relief. Sometimes for mothers it is a cry of despair. School is out - Oh "No! - What will I do with those kids for two months! Summer time should be a positive time. Parents do not despair. You can choose to make this a very positive time in your fami- ly. This could be the sum- mer of unprecedented family communication. It has been said that com- munication is the real basis for all positive family developments. Make this summer a good family experience. Summer is a good op- portunity for families to talk. Schedules are not as hectic, life is less hurried and the TV is boring. Talk- ing to your children need not be a frightening ex- perience. Investigate the wonders of that young mind. Find out what they have learned or remembered from this past year in school. What have they been wanting to tell you but you didn't have time to listen carefully before. Give them time and opportunity and you will be surprised at what you learn. Summer is a good time to do activities together. We are no longer bound by the cold restraints of winter. Freedom from winter boots, mitts and parkas seems to give us a freedom for outdoor ac- tivities. Summer is the op- portunity for creative fami- Troe ee Pee eS . SP eS ee travelling parents and children can be creative in finding ways to make long trips enjoyable. Possibly this is the summer when you can teach your children to fish, swim, canoe or to enjoy the wonder of nature. Good family com- munication does not limit itself to just talking or physical activity. Complete communication involves our spiritual dimension. Possibly your travels will provide opportunities to visit different places of worship. Taking time to worship God during sum- mer activities can be a very broadening experience for the family. Experiencing God in the natural surroundings of nature is a great learning time for families. Psalm 95 verses 3 to 6 states: "For the Lord is the great God, The great King above all gods. In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The seas are His, for He made them, and His hands formed the dry lands. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;"'. School is out! It does not need to be a cry of despair. Summer vacation can be a positive time in your fami- ly's growth. Make this summer a summer of com- munication. A summer of communication within the family and with God. It will be a beneficial ex- perience for everyone. Gordon Lang Tips for the unemployed student. Different people have different reasons for work- ing. Some people work to earn money, some work to gain experience for future goals, and some work to pass the time. One of the first things that a student should do is organize him/herself, and take a look at the job market. Be very honest with yourself, and ask a few questions such as: Why do I want to work? (money, career experience, to pass some time) What are my immediate and long range goals? (teacher, prime minister, professional cabbage roll eater) What are my talents and skills? (ciphering, gator wrestling, belly-bucking) What kinds of jobs and salaries can I reasonably expect to be offered in my local market? How many different kinds of jobs could possibly do that I would find rewarding? Once you have honestly and seriously answered these questions you will have a more objective view Collin Folz: Go swimming if my tonsils get better, we might be moving, I might ride my bike most of the summer, and I might drive my mom nuts.
