NOTE: : Students presently attending this school need not re-register. D.L. Davey, Principal. M. Twomey, M. Reid, : Director. Chairman age of their child. He began the session by explaining that a child's uniqueness results from heredity, physiology, his or her position in the family (eg. oldest) and his or her environment. "From birth to 15 months," he com- mented, "a child passes through what's referred to as the oral stage,"' a stage in which the child satisfies its basic need for nourish- ment by first using his or her mouth to attract atten- tion and then to suckle or nurse. During this phase the child learns feelings, smells, sounds and more importantly, depending on the parents' approach, degrees of trust.in other persons who look after him or her. In these first few months of life parents need a great deal of patience while they learn to interpret their baby's cries -- discipline at this stage has little, if any, effect. Dr. Young then went through the subsequent stages of development -- the toddler who's just lear- ning that he or she is uni- que, who loves the word NO, who likes to be around other kids but who really isn't a good sport and therefore doesn't interact with them well; the pre- schooler who doesn't want to be a "baby" anymore, who tries to act like a little adult but who really needs parents' loving direction and control; the school-age child who is learning to "socialize aggression;; - to become a good sport, who is becoming more con- scious of outward relation- ships and is less inward looking; and the early adolescent or young teenager who, often to a parent's dismay, is actual- ly repeating the earlier stages of development -- dependence, semi- dependence and_ in- dependence -- while at the same time. experiencing sexual maturation and._all the concerns that brings. If parents came away with anything from the workshop it would be the knowledge that' their children, however misbehaved at times, are in most cases just acting nor- mally for kids their age. And acting that way re- quires their parents, first- ly, to have the ability to understand the bases for behaviours at certain ages and secondly, to have the repertoire of parenting skills necessary to cope with that behaviour. For example, knowing that a six year old and nine year old, who are seeming- ly constantly fighting, are not doing so because they hate each other but rather because a typical six year old likes to "win" always, at everything, and by any means and a typical nine year old can accept 'defeat' only if it's "'by the rules", gives a parent a better understanding of such a situation and enables him or her to choose: the method of discipline that will work best to cool down the conflict. The local Parent Link group was pleased to be able to provide such an ex- cellent workshop leader for Terrace Bay/Schreiber and hopes to be able to bring in other speakers of this calibre again. Dr. Allan Young The Machine Maniacs by ERIN MARCELLA This week the machine maniacs got one step closer to completing our garments - first we measured ourselves to the right size for our patterns. Next we cut our patterns to the pro- per size. We stopped at that, but began to try the sewing machines. We followed the pieces of paper and got the hang of the machines. We decided to stop at this and call it an early wrap. (But it was a fun "early wrap."') excellent care. fruit baskets, Thank-you | would like to thank Drs.
