Terrace Ba Schreiber | POT 2wWo Wednesday, March 6, 1985 Public Library TERRACE Bay, ONT, C.C.T.F.N, Vol. 20, No. 10, Serving Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport 30° Curriculum reviewed By Kelly Ann Chesley There was a buzz in the air, and a feeling of high spirits when we dropped in to the first-meeting of Pro- gram Council East's '"Task Group" meeting here last week. Program Council East is a group of concern- ed secondary school teachers who, with the Northwestern 'Ontario Region of the Ministry of Education, have formed to review and reform the cur- riculum at the Basic Level, in our secondary schools. There are 22 classroom teachers who have been organized into Task Groups, each to' review a particular program begin- ning with Math Tech, English, Social Studies, Science and Family Studies. ~ . There -areé «3~=-school Boards involved: Geraldton Board which in- cludes their English and French schools; Lake Superior Board, which in- cludes Terrace Bay, Marathon and Manitouwadge; and the Nipigon-Red Rock Board. . These secondary schools have recognized the impor- tance of developing a cur- riculum to keep the student studying at the basic level, interested and absorbed in the school's programs although many of these students will not be atten- ding post-secondary schools. Unlike the larger schools, the smaller secon- dary schools do not and cannot employ full-time curriculum writers, yet curriculum is needed for the new Ministry of Educa- tion's Ontario Secondary School Diploma. These Task Groups are focusing on the develop- ment of personal skills, social understanding, self- confidence, and prepara- tion for the world of work.: The curriculum is to be shared by all three Boards and will assist the student to prepare for a successful, independent home and working life, to manage personal finances, to com- municate effectively, and develop attitudes that foster respect for the environ- ment, good health, fitness, and a positive approach to work and leisure. Program Council East has been assessing the needs of students since January 1985, and the Task Groups will continue with their workshops through May, 1985 with the pre- implementation taking : & place in September of 1985. These teachers will continue to keep in touch with each other to share feedback until they meet again in June 1986 to refine the program. Implementa- tion will then take place in September of 1986, to run until June of 1989 at which time workshops will again be set in motion to review and refine the curriculum. It's a monumental task, but these volunteer teachers are eager to get underway. With enthusiastic teachers like the ones that met in Terrace Bay last week, we feel hopeful once again for the Secondary School graduate. a Winter golfers taking part in the Kinsmen Winter Carnival festivities over the weekend. The Terrace Bay Kinsmen Club held their. Winter Karnival over the weekend, with a good many people taking part in the festivities, whieh rang- ed from a youngster's Scavenger Hunt, to a dance in conjunction with the No- Body-Contact Hockey Tournament. The favorite activity turned out to be the snow golf, with an array of talent, and expertise being shown, no matter what the condition of the course turned out to be. N.S.S.S.A.A. action at the Terrace Bay Curling Rink with the Nip on the ice for the last game. -Rock and Manitouwadge teams Mill will sell land Well, it sure has been a long wait, but finally Kimberly-Clark of Terrace Bay has agreed to make land available for purchase to the Township of Terrace Bay. Reeve Dave Speer is very excited about the move and hopes it.will not be long before the Municipality will be able to offer land to be used by private industry residential accom- modations. Until this time all land in the township had been owned and operated by Kimberly-Clark, bringing the involvement of the council into land allotment next to nil. With this action taking place the town's people and the council will play a much more active and prominent role in the selling and developing of the property in the township, and be able to concentrate more effort in Where is the ball and the search for potential developers and businesses. Council also hopes to see a number of private apartments built as it is next to impossible to find apartment accommodations if you are not a K-C employee, and even then it can be tough. The plan is in its first stages but it is, and has been, a priority of Reeve Speer's for some time. No definite contracts have been signed as yet, but we can be sure with the Coun- cil hard at work on this project, we should be see- ing results soon. , Gas station burns Saturday, March 2 saw the former gas station at Jackfish Lake, approx- imately 10 miles east of Terrace Bay, burn to the ground. The building, owned by Desmond Miller of Jackfish Lake, began to burn in the right front cor- ner, and when the Terrace Bay Volunteer Fire Dept. e arrived the fire was well -under way. The building does not operate during the winter months, but Mr. Miller does run a restaurant at that site during the summer. The O.P.P., with the help of Fire Chief Ed Stachiew have completed their report, and state there was no suspicious action involved.
