Anchor Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 6, 1985, page 11 Second week of Lent By Sharyl Marriott-Lowry As I sit to write this ar- ticle, I am acutely aware of the day. It is not only Fri- day (one of my favourites) and in the second week of Lent, but also the gathering day for all Christians to pray together. It is the global wide World Day of Prayer for Peace through Prayer and Action. Think of it, all thinking Christians everywhere tur- ning with one accord to worship God and bring our supplications to the Most High. It staggers the mind. The topic of our prayers too is rather awesome. We are to pray for peace. But what is peace? A shaky truce in Lebanon or El Salvador? An armistice between North and South Korea? Hours: 42-8 p.m. M-05 the arms race between the Super Powers? Or perhaps an end to family violence and child abuse in our towns? Or even a fall in the percentage of street crimes in Thunder Bay? These are valid peace concerns; political and social concerns. What does peace mean to a women who tries to feed her star- ving children, or a man who tries to carve out some safety for his family as they flee war and famine? Does peace then mean freedom from want, freedom from someone else's greed? These too are valid con- cerns but the topic of peace and its meaning are so large, so individual, that all these concerns are merely facets on the same gem that glitters in front of us in the press or touch experiences as the world gives doI give to you."' The peace of Jesus en- compassed the concerns of the world certainly but it was more than truces and treaties; more than full bellies and safety. It was the God-given heaven- made Shalom. Jesus' word for peace was the Hebrew word for 'perfect | wholeness.' Something this. shattered world could never have because the root of that wholeness was and is miss- ing inside of each one of the individuals that breath- ed and breathes on the face of the earth. Unless there is peace within, Fulton J. Sheen wrote, there will be no peace without. There can be no true peace in the world unless there is the wholeness in. every in- in our lives, now and dividual that encompasses again. all wants and needs and Peace is so nebulous.-It --_ digs out all corruption. is physical, mental and "World wars are only spiritual. It is political, social and personal. The only reason we have some knowledge of what it is, is because none of us have ever experienced it fully. We know it is what we have not got. Jesus had peace. "Peace I give to you," He said, '*My peace I leave you, not projections of the conflicts waged inside the souls of modern men, for nothing happens in the external world that has not first hap- pened within a soul."' Perhaps it is some measure of. success within ourselves that we have not annihilated each other com- pletely, or given up when we struggle for a limit to the arms race because we are now mature enough to realize that words like 'defense', 'deterrent', and 'first strike capability' have nothing to do with hope and grace and mercy. Perhaps it is a sign of God's gift among us when we cry out against child- battering instead of shrug- ging our shoulders. The root of peace is «in wholeness,-and wholeness is in God.
