Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 20, 1985 Puppet Show y. SANDRA SEBESTYEN Jean Marcella and Bev Smeltzer put on a great puppet show last Tuesday for the Junior Kindergarten kids. Around 20 kids at- tended with their mothers. « Jean said this was the first time she has ever done anything like this, and got the idea from her Thunder Bay work shop. There was' much preparation on her part, her husband Joe made the life size theatre. The kids seemed to love the show. It was geared toward using the library, and enjoying its facility. After the show Valentines were distributed. One child could be heard telling another "I hope they do this again tomorrow."' by HELENE BALLARD Good day. Looks and feels like winter is still with us, well cheer up, spring will be all the sweeter when it does come. I hope all of you had a nice Valentine's Day. I know I did. We had a very enjoyable afternoon with a tea, and games, you see we are all still "'Young at Heart'. If some of your "Fair Ladies" received a special 'rite'; Congratulations. It has been rather quiet at Birchwood. We had our usual afternoon card games with our friends from Schreiber, they always are a welcome addition to the card playing residents. We had a nice visit with the 'Beavers', along with their train leader, Janice Martin, and her helper Sue -Costa. I for one think it is nice to have the young children come to see us. Many of these children do not have Grandparents liv- ing here so maybe we can be Grandparents "'Pro Tem". At any rate we en- (joyed them and wish t thank their leader Janice Martin for bringing them. The quilt being made here is almost finished, and the tickets are on sale; good luck in the draw. It sure was nice to see the steps of the Post Office all cleared off of snow and ice, makes the climb up much easier, so to whoever did the shovelling, may I say, "Thank you." My bite is rather a tough one to make, but one that must be made. We here at Birchwood are lucky enough to be able to have Church service, because know we need not miss Sunday Worship, but there is a problem, and somehow it must be cleared up. There are too many people who come here for services so therefore there are too many people in the room. Also, small children who come distract the Seniors, as they cannot enjoy ser- vices in peace and quiet. This overcrowding is against the fire laws and the trouble getting out of the room in case of an emergency could cause a real panic. The chapel was put here for the use and comfort of the Residents and as most of our Residents are Catholic they _ would like to be able to en- joy our service as it was first intended. We really appreciate all that St. Mar- tins has done for Bir- chwood, and the C.W.L. for their kindness. We hope that you will unders- tand and co-operate and '*Thank you."' Until next week Cheerio; and remember: "There is a destiny that makes us Brothers, None goes his way alone All that we send into the lives of others Comes back own."' Author Unknown into our Schreiber public library The Schreiber Library Board held their monthly meeting on January 30th. The public is welcome to attend these meetings and help us with suggestions for improvement to the library. The annual election of officers was held at this meeting. Norah McGuire, after many productive years as chairman of the board, has resigned that position. She will remain on the Board. In her place, Betty Anne Klassen has agreed to assume the duties of the chair. Theresa Stor- tini was elected Vice Chairman. Miss Gwen Hadley remains as Treasurer and will be assisted by Pam McKeever as Secretary. We're all looking forward to another exciting year with lots of responsibilities. Story Time for pre- schoolers on Thursday afternoons continues. Billie Anne Saarinen and Kelly McGuire are running a varied programme for children which seems very popular. The board would like to thank Kelly for all her good work, and say "Bon Voyage." Kelly is leaving for Australia soon to visit relatives, and work. We hope it will be a happy and fulfililng time for her. Story Time will continue if we are able to find so- meone willing to donate an hour a week to this wor- thwhile programme. The Board has decided to try morning hours at the library. Several patrons have suggewsted that since they usually do their downtown business in the morning, it would be nice to be able to do their book exchange in the morning, too. So for the next few weeks at least, we'll be opening the library, Mon- day and Tuesday mornings from 10:00 a.m. until noon. If this new service is used, we'll continue ti. We have another new pro- gramme at the library which we hope will be very successful and lead to an eventual improvement in our services. The Nor- thwestern Regional Library has started the Board and the librarians on a training course to improve library skills.. We're learning to catalogue books, prepare file cards, order books to complete collections and many other skills which will improve the efficiency of the library. Our thanks to the consultants from the Northwestern Regional Library for sharing their time and experetise to make the Schreiber Public Library a more enjoyable experience for everyone. New Library Hours: Mon. 10:00 a.m. - noon, Tues. 10:00 a.m. - noon, Wed.-Sat. 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. : We hope these new hours make the library . more accessible to more people.
