Public Library TERRACE BAY, ONT. pot 2wo © eCoT ol Ne Terrace Bay Schreiber Serving Terrace Bay, Schr eiber and Rossport Wednesday, Febrary 20, 1985 Vet Clinic here by SANDRA SEBESTYEN Visiting the clinic on Wednesday Feb. 13, on both pleasure and business, I had the opportunity to talk to both Dr. Benz and Dr. Peterson. They were great- ly concerned about an in- fection carried by cat, call- ed Leukemia Viris infec- tion. This infection was unknown until 20 years ago. It is now regarded as a leading cause of pet cat deaths. Cats persistently: infected rarely live more than 3 years, and most die of associated diseases before cancer develops. Signs such as depression, fever, loss of appetite, and swollen glands in the neck or abdomen suggest onset of the disease. There's no conclusive evidence linking Fel V with cancer or other diseases in humans. Many public health officials and researchers, however, believe the safest policy at this time is strict isolation of any cat diagnosed. A vaccine is developed now and cats can be pro- tected. First time vaccina- tions require two doses given to to three weeks apart which have to be done in Thunder Bay, and a booster dose given two to four months later. After that a single dose per year is recommended. This is a life saving vaccine for cats and peace of mind for cat owners. be The Veterinary Clinic in Terrace Bay was held at the Scout Hall as usual.
