Page 10, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 20, 1985 Where are all the fans. We want to talk a bit about our arena. Not the acoustics, or the paint job, or that it may need more heaters, but the general ap- pearance of it during sports events, empty. We don't want to criticize, and are in no position to pass judgement, we are only curious as to where all the sports fans have gone? We see that the Recreation News _ with the Marathon Recrea- Swimming Lessons The Schreiber Recrea- tion Committee working Escaping insead of solving by SANDRA SEBESTYEN "Don't cry Judy, here have a cookie." Have you ever witnessed such a scene. Since most adults feel uncomfortable around tears, they hurry to stop them by any means, even bribery. From a psychological point of view, it would be better for Judy if she was allowed to cry. If allowed to express herself in this way, there is a good chance she will discover the real cause of her tears, and learn an in- valuable lesson for reaching maturity. The lesson is; there are solu- tions to problems, if you are free to express, and discuss your feelings con- cerning them. Too often pareents take the easy way out by diverting the child's attention from -- his problems. In studies of alcoholics, the basic personality is that of a childish person who cannot face life without his liquor crutch, not much different from the frighten- ed and unhappy child who is confronted by the offer of a cookie. At the last figure skating competition there were many local and out of town fans, mostly parents, eager to lend a helping hand, and of course, Mrs. Betty Bouchard. She has put in at least 30 years of service to this club, and probably just as many in the support of minor hockey. We wonder if her picture, hanging for all to see, might inspire us to spend a little more time at our local arena. We are not suggesting that everyone get involved to the extent as Mrs. Bouchard, or that people who don't go out to local hockey games are good for nothing, we only want to light a spark, that may bring some of you sports fans back in, to warm those spectator benches. But we also know that this is Canada's Winterland, so to speak, and we are not afraid of below freezing temperatures, gusting winds and ice crystals, are we? Think back to the days - of outdoor rinks, and the inspiration of the players to make their fans proud; that hasn't change.
