Marathon reeve * faces various" ; £ sexual offence Setsevesses charges The man described as one of the driving forces behind the development of Marathon was charged last week with various counts of sexual offences. William Springer, 48, appeared in provincial court in Thunder Bay on Thursday charged with buggery, sexual assault on a male and gross indecency. Springer, who. has been a public school teacher for the last 25 years has resigned as reeve of the community of 2,500. Marathon councilman Jack Warwick said the arrest of Springer has been a "severe blow"' to the community of 2,500. "It has upset the towns- people to say the least,"' said Warwick. SANDY SCOLLARD Saturday, Dec. 8, saw the Terrace Bay Arena invaded by 140 or more 'Mites'. No, Mites are not little bugs, but young (5, 6, and 7 yr. old) hockey players. Ter- race Bay Minor Hockey played host to the 2nd Annual Mite Tourna- ment, with teams from Longlac, Marathon, White River, Red Rock (two teams), and Ter- race Bay (three teams). The Terrace Bay Mites were divided into three teams because of the large registration this year. These teams And fun it ats were the "Tigers", the '*Lions", and the "Cou- gars'. The Tournament is an "'everyone's a winner" type event and all 140 children went home with beautiful medals. Juice and potato chips, given to the hard working players, were the high- light of the day for a lot of the little ones. Rumor has it that some of the children slept with their 'first'? medals on. all night! The theme for this Tournament was "Hockey for the fun of --140 little kids showed us all how it's done! This Provincial Nature Reserve incorporates internationally recognized occurrences of cherty rocks notable for some of the oldest microscopic life forms known in Canada.
