Trail cont'd continued from page 8 ers in the area with the Jackfish Tunnel Pro- ject. This boat tunnel runs under the CPR overpass that separates Jackfish Lake from Lake Superior. The purpose 'of the tunnel is to give boaters access be- tween the two lakes. Over time, the tun- nel had become clog- ged with rocks and de- bris. Workers hired by the Jackfish Boating association with NEIP funding, cleared out the rocks and reinforced the tunnel with steel and wood beams. The pro- ject cost approxima- tely $7500 and em- ployed six people. For the naturalists, the tunnel offers a chan- ce to see a rather unique fresh water phenom- ena. A small tide flows through it between Jack- fish Lake and Lake Superior. This is a local occurrence caused by the varying water lev- els of the two lakes. For example, if rainfall is heavy in the large region of the Lake Superior drainage basin, Super- ior's water level rises and water flows from it through the tunnel to Jackfish Lake. If local rainfall raises Jack- fish's water level then the tide flows from it to Superior. Jackfish Lake is a man made lake; created by construction of the CPR overpass which sepa- rated the former Lake Superior bay and made it into an individual body of water. The common link between the tun- nel and trail projects is im. dodick R.O. optometrist biscast for Sale 228 Macdonald Ave. 3 bedroom, 3 pc bath, utility room, large sun- deck, garage on large lot over looking lake.
