Voyageurs visit Rossport by ANNE TODESCO Excitement ran high as the villagers gather- ed at the local park to welcome the three canoes of Voyageurs who arrived here en- route to Thunder Bay. It was a colourful sight to see them paddling to the beach in canoes' paint- ed to resemble birch bark canoes of 200 years ago and their colourful clothing of Hudson Bay coats, scarves and caps and moccasins, singing in French and English as they approached. The Bicentennial Committee (Charles Hutterli, Anne Todesco and Laurajane Tympko) welcomed the crew with Mrs. Margaret Birch, the Parliamentary Assis- tant to Premier Wm. Voyageurs arrive via canoes at Rossport Harbour. Route instruction is given to Voyageurs prior to their leaving Rossport. Setting up camp at Wardrope park. Davis of the province of Ontario. Mrs. Birch hosted the crew at a dinner at the Rossport Inn. Also pre- sent were three mem- bers of the Rossport Bicentennial Com- mittee, Anne Todesco, Laurajane Tymko and Charles Hutterli as well as B. Collinson and Cathy Gerow of the Rec- - reation Committee. The voyageurs enter- tained Rossportites and some people from Schreiber, with songs and skits of the comic and satire of life that the voyageurs of the early historic days of 300 years ago of the hard- ships rules that they had to endure. The Recrea- tion Committee enter- tained the group, pro- viding a dance in the community hall. Mrs. Birch and her party left for the Lake- head following the din- ner. Terrace Bay Council Report | The regular meeting of the Terrace Bay Council was held in Chambers on June 25, 1984. Councillor Ken- nedy was absent. Prior to the regular business, a special pre- sentation was made to Steve Badger of Ter- race Bay. Reeve Speer and Councillor Ollie Chapman (chairman of 25th Anniversary Com- mittee) presented Steve with 25 silver dollars as his prize for the winning logo in the "2Sth Anni- versary Logo Contest."' Look for Steve's logo which will appear on various hats, t-shirts and pins that are now on sale at Moore's of Ter- tace Bay. Congratula- tions Steve, on a great logo for our anniversary. Approval of the June 11th minutes was made. No one was present for deputations regard- ing the re-zoning by-law #11-84 pertaining to the Berglund Industrial property on the Mill Road. Correspondence The McCausland Hospital requested a contribution of $650 to go towards the partici- pation of their staff in the Ministry of North- ern Affairs' health pro- fessionals recruitment programme on behalf of the municipality. Council passed the mo- tion to make this contri- bution, as the ongoing search for medical per- sonnel is essential to underserviced com- munities such as Ter- race Bay. New Business The following tenders were received for an airport vehicle: From Brennen Bros. in Nipigon - $17,548 (with delivery in 10 weeks) and from Spa- doni Bros. in Schreiber - $15,448.17 (with im- mediate delivery). Council, through a reso- lution, opted for the tender submitted by Spadoni Bros. Council has set up their schedule for sum- mer. meetings. Council will meet during the summer months as fol- lows: July 16th and August 13th. The dates will be published in future editions of the "NEWS." Council will also meet with the Curling Club regarding their lease re- newal on July 16th. A letter was received by Council pertaining to the E.M.O. (Emergency Measures Organization) stating that the Provin- cial Government has re- duced funding for this group by 60 per cent. Funding was requested in the amount of $41,000 but was $16,000 due to cut backs. Taxpayers will have to compensate for this difference. Council will reply to this act by stating their displeasure _ to the province of On- tario.
